Being what you wouldn't exactly call an expert when it comes to cameras I have a question. While reading the various posts I have heard talk of a "nifty fifty". Is It a lens? Is it any good? what make of camera does it fit and what would you usually use it for? Thanks once again for your help!

The Nifty fifty is a 50mm lens with a f/1.4 or f/1.8
This will give you an idea as to the flexibillity

Not quite, IMO. For Canon users the nifty fifty is the 50mm f/1.8, which is ridiculously good value for money since it's a very sharp but very cheap lens. The 50mm f/1.4 is even better, but it's a lot more expensive and not so "nifty".

You could say the same for Nikon - the f1.4 is more then double the cost of the F1.8 ;)

hi

can you get a nifty fifty for the D40X for some reason i think a heard you can's (as you would have to manually focus it)?

I have just bought a nifty fifty for my Canon. The cheapest lens in my kit are by far the best and most used. Its the 50mm f1.8. Excellent for studio & portrait work. Gives a really great shallow depth of field.

To put it simply, if you do not have a 50mm 1.8, then you need to go buy one asap!

the cheapest and best lens there is!

i have a big problem now, its so good that its going to take a pretty amazing lens to beat it in terms of image quality!

The D40/x will only auto-focus with Nikon AF-S or Sigma HSM lenses. I don't think a 50mm is available in either form.

nifty fifty hunts around too much :/ too slow focus

It is slow compared to Nikon AF-S/Sigma HSM but it is stupidly sharp. I'd prefer to use my 50mm for most things other than motorsport photography, unless I am very close to the track.

I love my fifty BUT find it terribly slow to focus and b****r all use for moving objects tracked with AI Servo focusing mode. Static subjects it turns out some absolutely spanking shots and there aren't many days out I don't find some use for it.
