Now that I know what a nifty fifty is, I've also heard talk of canon L glass (some sort of lens I presume) so my question is this is there a Nikon equivalent?

No there is no equivalent branding hype. The quality of the optics is proportional to the price. For example you can get a 300mm f4 for something like £900 or a 300mm f2.8 for something like £3,000. The better glass costs more but does not have any designation like Canon's "L" which by the way they like to use with a red font for some reason :cuckoo:

Iirc you also have the Nikon pro spec glass which is usually denoted by a gold ring near the front element.

What he said ^^

Nikon's flagship lens are denoted with a gold ring at the front of the lens

That's because the L lenses have a thin red line around the front. Or the other way around. Or something.
