Yes
....Ouch! (sob):'( :'(

That's all I need. I was out with clients being the consumate professional when I was walking out of a water pumping station and the heel of my boot caught a mat which had ruffled in the doorway. I sort of flew out of the door and my left knee cap crashed onto the top step (concrete) and my shin bone caught the edge of the next step down. I ended up face down in the gravel with a stinging gravel rash on my right palm and knee and lots of missing skin and blood on my extremely painful left leg.

The 7 other people with me rushed to pick me up and when asked if I was hurt, I replied in a squeaky voice - Oh! I'll live, and tried to carry on regardless. When no one was looking, I took a peek at my leg - Ouch!

That was at 2:30pm and as time has gone on, it is getting more painful. When I bend my knee, it feels odd and instead of it being a rounded shape when bent, it goes out to a point and hurts. :'(

My hubby wants me to go the hospital. I am reluctant to go, in case I have done something serious. I am doing my first fashion shoot tomorrow and the model is booked - I have to be there.

Sorry guys, I just needed to sound off. I suppose I had better let work know what happened for the record. Fortunately, my line manager witnessed the incident.

I think your husband's right - you should get it checked out at hospital just in case you have broken anything.

Sounds horrible.

:( Gilly, get down to hospital, please. Knees are awful they get damaged and not attended to, you could be leaving yourself open for years of problems. Plus at least they can check it out and put your mind at rest that it's hopefullyt just very sore and no break!! GO!! Please!

Which, as I suspect you are already well aware - is just why you SHOULD go. Get it checked out now and worst case scenario will probably be that you do the job tomorrow with crutches - but at least you might be able to still manage the job. Leave it overnight and the chances are you won't be able to move at all in the morning.

If you really won't go to the hospital, get a bag of frozen peas or similar out of the freezer - wrap in a tea towel, and apply to your leg. Take some Ibruprofen tablets (assuming you can take them) or other anti-inflammatories and that should at least minimise the swelling. If you're in any doubts as to a maximum dose of ibruprofen you can safely take ring NHS direct - they will also be able to advise you of what else you should do.

Oh, and advise your manager tomorrow as soon as you can that someone should ensure the accident book is filled in - it can be done on your behalf if you're unable to do so yourself.

Meanwhile have a

Hmmm. I knew you guys would agree with Hubby. I have just run a salty bath and going to lie in it for awhile. I will let you know the outcome. I'm worried about tomorrow with the studio and model booked. What a mess.

Witch - the bag of peas sounds good. I have got Ibruprofen tablets if I chicken out of going to hospital tonight. I KNOW I will have to go tomorrow. Thanks for your kind thoughts and advice.

So ... bandage yourself up you wimp and go to hospital after the shoot ... :D

Totally NOT the right thing to do ... :nono: ... but if it makes you feel better for someone to say it ... ;)

OJ ... of course ... :naughty:

:p

Oh! Ven, don't make me laugh. You must have read my mind, 'cause that was what I was planning to do until hubby started nagging.

I thought at the time, I was brave in front of the clients, but as soon as we left, I was a right :baby: - didn't cry though.

:nono: BAD Ven!!!

Definately if it's swollen go down the ice route Gilly - can't do any harm if it doesn't do any good. Remember it's no good you getting to the studio tomorrow and not being able to move - you probably do stand a better chance if you get some treatment for it.

Fingers x'd it all works out OK.

:nono: BAD Ven!!!

I love it when you waggle at me

WHY did I just read that as bondage and whip

Sorry, but I'd have to agree with your hubby too. Sounds like a nasty fall. You are better off going and getting your knee checked out tonight. The worst they are probably going to do is give you some painkillers and bandage it for you, and possibly x-ray it. If you have done any serious damage to your knee, it's best to get it looked at sooner rather than later.

What's worse - a lifetime of knee pain and trouble because you didn't get it checked out, or an inconvenienced model who could re-schedule?? Sorry to sound negative, but your health really is more important.

As Robyn said, do make sure you get the accident put in the accident book at work.

Hope you get your knee sorted soon

Not sure it is that kind of shoot Witch!

Sounds like a painfull trip :( Only you can know how badly it hurts, but I would get it checked out for sure.

Hot bath , Ibuprofen & Alcohol can help you heal 42 times faster - FACT :rules:

Disclaimer : I had a nasty accident skiing & was told I'd be on crutches for 6 weeks , I was back on the slopes within 36 hours due to the above cure . It worked for me but it may not be suitable for pregnant women , midgets or people with ginger hair :)

Hmmmm! seeing as I fall into your second category, I better not follow your cure  Yeah, I know I used to be 6' but had a few hard landings during free fall parachuting - now 4'11" :bonk:

Owch..that does sound very painful, hope you did the right thing and go to the hospital.

A model shoot is only for tomorrow and soon forgotten, a leg is for life. It would be no fun being a cripple all the rest of your life because it was a compound fracture and you did not get it set fast enough, plus leaving it could bring on other serious complications. Photography is the most inconsequential activity in the world compared to your health.

Let the doctor tell you whether you are fit enough to do a model shoot, that's what they are paid for! There will be other model shoots, you will never get another leg, unless it is an artificial one!

along the same lines does anyone know if a chipped bone hurts and how it hurts??

I fell forwards straight down onto concrete a few weeks ago with all the shopping which went everywhere!! :D

Knee went blue and after a few days was fine again. But now, although nothing hurts on a day to day basis, if anything just touches a certain place on the front of my knee cap it feels like someone has burnt me with a cigarette there. If the bone is chipped...what is it that hurts.... can a bone hurt??

No point me telling you to go to hospital Gilly... after this story!! :D

I would go to the hospital and remember, where there's blame there's a claim :D

Crikey Bob the girlies on here are having a tough time falling over themselves ... :suspect: ... what are you all on cos I want to steer clear ... :D

First I must make it clear I am NOT a Doctor ... ;) ... but I believe you can chip certain bits of your skeleton, such as the knee and have floaters ... i.e. bits of bone floating around the main bone ...

Sometimes these can go years un-noticed and others they can cause a bit of grief ... sounds like yours falls into the latter J ... the chip itself is probably not what hurts rather than the tissue surrounding it ... ... either way you should perhaps go see your GP or A & E and get it checked out imgo ...

:p

You dont need a hospital, You need a pub! Injured people go to hospitals, People who aren't injured go to pubs. Therefore if you go to the pub you cant be injured.

CONVERSELY ...

A lot of people go to the pub ... fall over and get injured ... and end up in hospital ... ;)

:p

I am still here and in pain. I tried the ice pack and painkillers last night and chickened out of going to hospital. - Let me explain something for you city or townie people. I live in a very rural part of Mid Wales and the nearest A&E is over an hour away in England (who don't care too much about the Welsh). We have to plan our injuries to coincide with procedures and opening times of a cottage hospital.

I decided last night that I wasn't dying - 'cause it hurt too much and didn't want the hassle of the Dr huffing and puffing if he was called out to see me at the cottage hospital last night. NHS Direct suggested same as some of you guys - nooooo not the alcohol bit - and go to my GP in the morning.

Drs this morning said it was not an emergency and the earliest I could see a GP was at 5:30pm tonight. Work insisted I get checked out too.

I did go and do the model shoot and enjoyed it, and fortunately did not have to get down on my knees. I will post some piccies later for the usual slating - erm! critique.

Thanks for all the advice - I will let you know what (if any) the damage is later.

Gillian

Ta for the update Gilly ... ... and pleased you survived the night and ordeal of your critical shoot ... :D

Hey Gilly glad to hear youre not feeling too bad.
Cant wait to see the pics later ... sorting them for us will give you an excuse to get off your feet. ;)
Good luck later!

Looking forward to those shots Gilly. Hoping that time heals your leg and you dont in fact need to go to hospital.

:)

Yes - you can indeed chip bits of bone off Janice - I smashed my elbow a few (well OK- rather more than a few!) years back falling from a horse and still to this day have the end of the bone on the inside of my elbow floating loose! I was advised at the time to have it operatoed on as it could have been reattached but decided against, and have been glad I did as barring the occasional aching from it, and a complete inability to hold my left hand out flat with palm facing upwards, I have NO ill effects at all from it now!

A quick update....

.....Been to the Dr's and he said I have badly bruised my knee-cap and shin-bone. His only concern was the skin had been broken considerably and infection is likely. To cut a long story short, he said it is going to be bloody painful for the next 3-4 weeks, with hopefully no lasting damage. Phewwwww! I am so glad.

Right Guys, thanks for all your support and advice. I will post some images of today's shoot in a new thread in a minute under a new heading for critique - Janice et al, I hope to impress you with my White backgrounds - in camera!...

I'm glad to hear that it's not too bad. Hope it heals well and isn't too painful.

I can't believe that no one has suggested slapping a hefty law suite on the owner of the floor mat, making enough cash from it to buy an island in the indian ocean and saying b*&^%*s to working again :D

Might not happen though ;)
