Began my Log today. Day 1

Day 1 : Went to 2 Camera shops in Altrincham, they were both outside the bus Station. I went in an Independent retailer shop first called 'Kamera Altrincham' - they had a big Advert in the window for the Canon 450D. I went in 2 guys in there, a long haired dude was doing something at the far away desk, and an old guy about 55ish behind the counter next to the door (looked like the owner). Said I was interested in finding out about the 450D, answer 'its not in stock', ok. This guy really wasnt interested whatsoever, it was bordering on being uncomfortable, I attempted asking newbie questions, the guy wasnt interested. I left swearing under my breath.

Crossed the road and went into Jessops, two guys in there, one guys very enthusiastic helping a woman with some machine they had, and a Lab guy. he was fking awesome - 20+ year photographer, showed me the camera and explained loads of things to me even though I said i wasnt interested in buying until November. He took me to a cabinet where a range of Canon cameras, price ranged from 300 - 1800 quid, at this point a customer had been waiting at the counter for service for 5 mins. He took me through the entire structure of the setup from body to lens then flash - he also said avoid the Jessops brand flash and go , Canon body, Canon lens, Canon Flash. He said the Lens you get with the Canon was adequate unless the sigma was for lower light (or somethink like that) I couldnt remember the Sigma specs. What was especially interesting was that he said Jessops do a very comprehensive insurance which covers business use - when u buy the camera from there, well worth knowing.

I had a good experience and will consider jessops for the insurance, he recommended a 600 quid cannon lens though - i will research this more.

Definate : 450D Camera is confirmed.

So thanks for that guys, appreciated your advice I wont keep blogging, just though you might be interested in the result of the research of your recommendations.

Thanks once again.

Reminds me of a recent Harry Enfield sketch . . .

Jessops is cool for advice and whatnot but their prices make me choke everytime I walk into the place.

Still, advice is free, find out as much as you can about what you need/want from the Jessops crowd then when you are ready hit the internet and buy you camera/lens/flash/combo from there. I would recommend somewhere reputable like wareehouse express, they aren't the cheapest but they are such a big company you know you are getting officially imported stock so the warranty will stand.

Keep an eye out for Dixons web specials. Got my D300 from them in April or may for £899. It's still not come down to that anywhaere else.

That's a damn good price. I was keeping a check on Camerpicebuster, and they've only just come doen to around the £900 mark.

Is that a UK model, or a grey import? The site says a 12 month international warranty

I agree the site does seem a bit vague about the warranty so I will have to contact them.

The title of the camera states "Nikon Warranty" and the web site also quotes "UK Retailer" so one is led o believe that you would get the full UK warranty.

Looking at the terms and conditions it states "All products come with at least 12 months warranty (where indicated some items may have longer warranty periods)".

So the question is, does the fact that the title says "Nikon warranty" mean full or a 12 month international ?

If it were only 12 months then I would be tempted to pay an extra £40 to get a uk spec with full warranty.

You don't accept Jessops price.
You ask for a price match, they don't always, but most of the time come close.
Got my Nikon D300 from them in January for £945....

well worth knowing, im an ebay whore - but i dont want to get into shipping a camera back and forth to china if it arrives with issues. Thats why i went high st shopping. TBH the guy dave I felt was genuinely excited about me getting to to Photography, i think he's look after me on price

Hi Godmodeuk,
I agree with the others that Jessops are not the cheapest, but bear in mind that you can go and pester them forever once you've bought something and get a problem, or just want to find out stuff.
Andy.

And also you can do their buy now pay later.

Even if you have the cash for it, put it in a bank and earn interest for a year, then pay it off.

I've had great experiences with Jessops in Stratford and Crewe - and a poor experience due to a disinterested salesperson in Warrington. Not only did I know a hell of a lot more about cameras than he, he didn't seem to care about it..

Having said that, my last two camera purchases were from independents, but I hold nothing against Jessops. I bought both my bodies from them, as I love having the local backup if the body goes bad. Lenses I'll shop around for a little harder. I certainly don't want to see Jessops go bust - and recently, since their 'scare', they seem to be competing far harder; often on camerapricebuster, their prices are amongst the most competitive.

I agree about Jessops, always helpful prices a bit OTT, Ive just purchased my Canon 40d at Dixons Duty free shop at Manchester airport - well worth the wait price wise with my £60 off total £671
