There's no real purpose to this thread, but I've spent the day reading up (and viewing up!!) on Lightroom and feel I've finally cracked the back of it! I know there's loads more to do, but I'm well chuffed that it all seems to have clicked today :D

Great news, looks like I'll be noising you up soon then considering I've just bought it!

Didn't take you long to make a decision! ;) Have a look at Adobe TV. I've been watching videos from Julieanne Kost all afternoon (and googling simultaneously) and they've been great. A good place to begin with the basics. I've also been taking notes [/nerd] as well!!!

Any particular pointers? I always feel slightly lost trying to use it, too many buttons, too many toolbars (and this is from someone who feels reasonably comfortable inside CS3).

It took me a while to get used to lightroom, but now I have it is much much simpler to use and speeds up my workflow up massively.
Well done on cracking it and hopefully you will see the benefits.

It's up to you and your individual learning style. But for me it was a few hours peace and quiet on my own, some of the videos mentioned above, making some notes and above all doing what was done in the videos for myself. I also googled a few things I wanted to know and generally had a play around.

I have the basics of processing down, but had no clue about the organisational side of LR before today. Just a few hours spent on it has made it click for me :)

Frenchman - you're right. It is simple when you get your head round it!! :)

I think Scott kelby has a 7 step system or some such that is very good when learning lightroom. He basically shows you 7 steps to process any image. Eg step 1. White balance, is it OK or need adjusting, then how to do it easily.

It's a good way to learn when starting out and a system is useful when doing large numbers to stay on track. I have a rule, no image can spend more than 3 minutes in post. I often use a timer to stop myself getting carried away with one image. When you have a hundred images that's 5 hours work, so I have to do it quick.

Thanks lensflair. I'll have a look for that. Sounds useful.

My system for processing images in Lightroom is pretty similar - work down the panels on the right from top to bottom.

I've had a go on my mates lightroom with a view to buying it, but even with his input, I just got completely lost and couldn't see any benefit over using photoshop. I know people will tell me otherwise, but I guess I'm used to working with, one, so learning another isn't easy.

Am I wrong here or is lightroom mainly better for multiple images and PhotoShop better for single images?

I use both (well PSE9 and LR3) - albeit in a very much learning / newbie / "lets press this and see what happens" kind of way!

I now have my LR set up so all my photos are organised, and am in the process of tagging them so, for example, I can have automatic sets created of all the photos of my son. I also use it for publishing to Flickr (public and private photos) and to Facebook.

I use LR for the big edits - cropping, straightening, adjusting WB, etc. It is also possible to save what you do as a pre-set so you can apply the same settings to a number of different shots. Handy if you have a lot taken at the same time you want to do the same basic processing to.

I also use PSE9 for more detailed touching-up ... or am trying to anyway ;)

It's all a learning curve and I think as with most things, if you've got a way which works for you, then don't mess with it!

Good work Babs!

I'm getting there too - The Adobe TV movies are good as are those y David MArx on www.thelightroomlab.com - I can see LR3 being a real boost for me in keeping my photos organised and also reducing my workflow (eventually :D)

I've just bought Lightroom 3 on the cheap - well, the student edition [I realised that I do officially qualify!]

Just waiting for Adobe to give me the go-ahead [you have to email them for a serial number, having scanned in your ID documents; a real pain, but at least I suppose it means not everyone will just buy the education edition...]

It doesn't take very long for adobe to certify your ID iirc.

Just found out that my wife, as a teacher, qualifies for the education discount. I know what we're getting when she's home from work!

It's very handy! Just bear in mind you can only get one adobe product per 12 months (I think) so just make sure you buy the right one you want!! But it's a huge saving!

Of the same product. As a student I have bought Lightroom, then later bought Photoshop CS5 and 2 months later realized I would need the full Production Premium CS5 so I bought that as well. Only downside is you are not allowed to sell it on, so I'm stuck with two versions of Photoshop CS5... :/

Adobe is quite nice when it comes to Student discounts. :)

it is a brilliant piece of software, i use it for my processing, and i really could not live without it. play around with everything and have fun!

I downloaded lightroom trial version. What a load of complicated horse waste. Didn't have a clue what does what. Everything looks crammed and too complicated. Will stick with CS4, thanks.

Did you also know that it qualifies her for the Apple educational discount too? Think it's 10% - good to know if you're thinking of a big purchase, think it's only for macs and not iPod type things but still worth knowing
