My work mate has seen me with the D90 and is now it two minds if to go for it instead of the D300. I said go for the D90 as i have been very impressed so far! His worried about the less points of focus then the D300 and which one has better white balance proformance.

His totall budget is about £1000, so it current costings that would either be the D300 or the D90 with lens!

A D300 wont get him far with out any lenses to take shots with.

A very reliable little bird has told me that we can expect a D300 replacement soon.

Try to find a refurb, for about £700. Don't buy new - not a good time at all. The price has gone up a lot anyhow, and if what is coming is coming then you'll be able to buy used ones for much much less quite soon once all the "must have the latest" folks starting Ebaying...

sorry should have said he has a D40 all ready so has the 18-55 kit lens!

In that case he's making the classic mistake of looking to get a new body, when he should be replacing that 18-55...

mad but wasn't it launched in Sept 07 can't believe its that long ago

As said. The kit lens is the restricting factor of their setup at the moment. Sort the lens out first for sure.

Not neccesarily. The D40 is easy to outgrow.

As a D300 user I'd recommend a D90 + lens. The D90 shares the same sensor as the D300 and while the D90 doesn't have the same build or AF points, tbh you only really need these if you're shooting a lot.

Its the old thing of electronics are out of date before they come of the production line a bit like computers.

my advice to him was D90 plus kit lens, but he seems to be stuck on wanting the D300! even after i got him to read the Ken Rockwell review! lol

:agree: Thats what I'd do in his position!

More AF points are better? ;-)

Theres been talk for a while now about the D400, it's expected to be around 15-16mp and have a video option (like the D90, if it's going to be launched it'll most lightly be at the PMA show in March. Wayne

Presumably DX, leaving room for an FX D800? So what would be the anticipated schedule for a D800 announcement... Autumn? Spring 2010??

Some of the rumours suggest a DX/FX sensor, if true I wonder what in store for the D4 then?? Wayne

Id tell him to get a second hand d80 and put the spare cash towards new lenses

Maybe he thinks the same as I do about most of the stuff Rockwell spouts...
