And their superior lens line-ups.

You have to look beyond the camera body to truly understand why people purchase a particular brand.

There words ... AUTO FOCUS ZEISS.

To the OP, I'd echo the recommendation to try an a580. On the DXO sensor mark site it scores better than the a55 and it's right up the with Nikon D7000 which costs nearly twice the price. In contrast, the current 18mp Canon sensor scores rather badly.

nikon ;)

This thread has made me .
Every time a new to DSLR comes on here asking what gear to buy, the first reply is to buy what feels good in your hands. Allan has been to his local shop and like the Sony, and some of the first replys are to go for a Canon or Nikon.i would also like to know how many of the people putting down the EVF have tried the latest generation of them.

I have tried the new evf's.

The a55's is rubbish, not much better than evf's found in bridge cameras in the early 2000's.

Manufacturers are already moving away from the evf's for the leaf shutter cameras - just look at the awesome rangefinder hybrid on the Fuji x100.

Sorry to res this thread again guys but does the a580 lcd flip all the way down so you could use for self portraits? I cant find anything anywhere showing that.

No, it only seems to flip back 90 degrees.

Thanks Fozzybear.

I think im going to go for the a580 as seems to be rated better quality photos, whereas the a55 is more video orientated. Does anybody know if it does the freezeing screen is an issue on the a580?

Going back to an earlier comment, calling Sony Cameras an inexperienced company is a bit harsh, they aquired the old Konica-Minolta Camera business.

Minolta traced back to 1928, and Konica 1873.
Canon were founded in 1937.
Nikon 1917.

Now who is the newcomer?

Also, does anyone think they still have the same employees or that people dont move between the 3 companies, if its anything like the industry I work in people will have worked for all of the big names.

Just because the name is new, doesnt make the Sony Camera division a new company.

JMHO, YMMV

Nick

I've no idea why anyone who was serious about photography would buy a Sony, when there are so many better cameras out there.

Spoken like a true dyed in the wool Canon user. I bet you also drive an Audi or BMW.
