Yes
Ok, so I've been on a touchy feely session today.

The winner WAS the Canon EOS450D until someone then said or what about this nice Nikon D5000 ..... b****r I like that too !

Another problem is the 10EOS discount on the Comet website looks to be invalid now ?

If that's the case the EOS will be £444 after claim and SNOW (-5%) code for Comet.

The Nikon is £453 with claim etc.

You know what's coming ..... for £9 is the Nikon much if any better ?

:bang::bang::bang::bang:

Which feels nicer?

And which lens system is cheaper? THink long term. I know most Nikons don't have in camera stability, like the canon, which makes the nikon glass costlier (I think?)

OK if you like the feel, what do you think you want to photograph in the future. As Lawrie29 says, lens choice comes next. Canon have a range of high quality semi-pro f4 L's which Nikon do not have an equivalent for, and they don't have an MPE-65 either.

If you want to do macro, then maybe the swivel screen of the Nikon would be another factor

I'll only use it for photo's of the kids and the dog at the weekends, maybe take it on holiday, the odd shot of my son playing football etc.

I'm a total novice !

I don't know about either camera in great detail, but if it were me, I wouldn't buy the Nikon because it won't autofocus with lots of Nikon-fit AF lenses.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but have you looked at the Sony offerings? For the sort of use you're describing you'll get a lot of camera for your money with one of those....

Will it autofocus with the kit lens though ?

If/when I get to a stage where I want a better lens I would like to think I would be advanced enough to handle the focus ?

Yes, it'll autofocus with the kit lens and plenty of others and of course photographers managed for a century and a half without autofocus. Nevertheless, I wouldn't want my choice of lenses to be restricted like that and I think a Nikon body with an autofocus motor or a Canon would be far preferable.

Yes and with most of the current Nikon lenses (except the 50mm f/1.8))

That depends on the 50mm 1.8 you get, there is an AF-S model available. Granted, that makes it more expensive.

The most common answer is buy the camera that feels nicest. If you think they all feel nice buy the one that will give you the best bang for buck. As people have said, think long term. Think what lenses you might upgrade to etc, etc.

What about that A350? That was a very good deal! To be honest I cringe at the thought of paying over 400 for an entry level DSLR. Get something cheaper! I got my A200 & lens with a bag and a 4gb CF for 270 quid and I absolutely love it. Perfect beginners camera. So much scope for lens upgrades too!

Aye, I know but I'm a gadget freak and want something shiny and new

New isn't always better, you'd be a bit silly to miss out on that deal! You could spend that extra 200 odd on a nice new lens :p A telephoto perhaps! I wouldn't personally buy the D5000 though as it lacks an internal AF motor, which means you're severely limited on your lens purchases. The 450d is allright but I know I wouldn't spend over 400 quid on one! But I guess if you want something shiny and new, it's the price you gotta pay :p

£405 for an A380 !

Stop confusing the issue!

weren't you looking at a mate of a mates A350 for £200?

ah,i see you want something new..but once yours is out of the box,it ain't new anymore, plus you're making a big saving which is always a good thing if you decide to upgrade,as you'll get back what you paid for it.

If you like both cameras equally its pretty much got to come down to future costs?
As said above Canon have a wider range and work out a bit cheaper.. For example if you got the Canon and got into wildlife you might like to buy yourself a 100-400L - from £800 s/h or about £1100 new.. Nikon basicllay don't really have an equivelent lens.. so you start looking at the 120-400 sigma, which appparently isn't all that great.. theres a thread on here about it that I read recently..

What about a bridge camera?

:plusone:

DSLR seems a bit overkill for what you are intending using it for. There are some excellent bridge cameras around. Unless you are prepared to put some time in to processing the shots I would say the pics will look better straight out of the camera too.

Just a thought :)

what about a pentax.
weather sealed body with in body shake reduction and af motor will work with lots of lenses and with shake reduction on all of them,
k10d.

k200d

samsung gx20 same as a pentax k20d but cheaper + weather sealed. and built in shake reduction. uses pentax lenses.

also you can get weather sealed pentax lenses cheap, so the camera will be fully weather sealed.

I know most Nikons don't have in camera stability, like the canon, which makes the nikon glass costlier (I think?)

Neither of them have in camera stability. The stability is not in the camera body but in the Canon IS or Nikon VR lenses. I do believe that the Sony bodies do have image stabiliser built into the camera bodies rather than the lenses.

What about a bridge camera?

That is a good point - a bridge camera will give you a lot of versatility without having to buy expensive additional lenses etc. I love my panasonic FZ8 and it only cost me £150. The only thing I'd say is some of the bridge camera's are super expensive and if you are going to spend £300+ you may as well get a DSLR.

Perhaps one of the Micro 4/3rds cameras would be worth a look (the Panasonic G1 would be a simialr price to what you've been looking at). Smaller and ligher than a DSLR, but with AF speed and image quality that is right up there. I've been trying a G1 recently and it is a joy to use, the swivel LCD makes candid shots of the kids a lot easier.
