I've Been Doing It Wrong.

Midges, leeches? Where do you people live?! Worse thing I ever come across is a house spider and even they're not bad. Did nearly step on a grass snake the other week, don't know which of us were the more surprised.

Scotland, famed for its midges. Annoying little blighters, I get a reaction to them which is even more unpleasant.

Ticks too, had a few last year. Saw an adder September 2020.

Never seen a kingfisher at night though.

Why IS Scotland overrun with midges? I've obviously heard about them in the Highlands in late summer but how do they survive your winters, it's not exactly warm up there in January after all. I live in Cornwall and if any part of the UK was going to get plagues of midges I would have thought it would be around here as our winters are very mild.

Winter has little or no effect, even a harsh one. They're well protected below the soil’s surface.

I'm originally from South Wales and they're bitey there but nothing like the Highland midge.

Blue Eared kingfisher is found in Asia. When I was out there few years ago I went into tropical forest to photograph rufous backed kingfisher hence my comment on mosquitoes and leeches.
