I believe the playlist points to the track. Export the playlist, Copy files to local PC, add files to iTunes, then import playlist :)

Quickest and easiest way to move your iTunes files is to temporarily enable to let iTunes to manage your files, then change the file path in preferences. It should move everything and keep your lib in order.

Only negative, if your music isn't labelled 100% correct it'll create all sorts of odd folder structures.

You used to be able to mod the lib XML file but that doesn't seem to have any effect these days?

I use my laptop to rip music and then copied all the files to my media server when I got it, I then added all the media to the iTunes library (add folder) and then imported my playlists and everything worked perfectly.

I've started using iTunes match to make it even easier :D

I've never successfully moved an iTunes library without a whole world of pain. Apple should sort this stuff......

I don't know much about modern versions of Windows, but can't you just map the new location to the Z drive? Then from iTunes POV nothing has really moved.
