itunes help for a novice

I have downloaded and installed itunes on my Dell computer.
I've put all my music on itunes that I have on my computer.
Now this is where I have no idea what's what.
I've got my wifes old ipad 4th gen. I have signed in on both ipad and computer itunes but there's nothing on the ipad.
What am I doing wrong?
 
You need to connect the pc to the iPad. You should then see it connected in iTunes. You should be able to sync your music to the iPad

Ok, so it's not the case that once you put it on itunes you can play it on any device?
 
You can play it on iPad iPhone and iPod. But you have sync them. Your library is on your pc so that’s were you sync from
 
You can use the Home Sharing feature to access your library on iTunes on the computer to play on your iPad when they're both connected to wifi.
 
If I go via the connect ipad to pc route I'm going need a lot more storage ipad. I've just put a few albums on for now.

Just done home sharing and it works a treat :)
