I recently decided to move from using Windows Media Player to using iTunes, mostly for the store option. Will any MP3 player sync with iTunes, or would it have to be an iPod? I'm not fussed at all about having an iPod, they're fashion accessories more than anything else, and Argos have an 8gb Phillips MP3 player at £40, half it's normal retail price.

I think it has to be an iPod...maybe someone else knows differently, but that's generally the way Apple does things...why assist the competition...?

Cheers Rob, thought as much! I can't justify paying £115 for an MP3 player. I know the Nano does more than that these days, but All I want's an MP3 player  Looking at a Phillips Raga, or maybe a cheapy Hitachi the PC world have on special offer at the moment.

Chris I think it is just ipods that can use Itunes. I picked my refurbished ipod nano 4gb for £60.00 from ebay!

Good idea Vicky, just had a quick shufty and there's an 8gb Mini for just over 30, not sure about buying an used player though.

I cant quite recall but I think mine was from either comet/curries/argos online store or something. Not sure how I would feel about a used one either but it could depend on description and seller rating.

Yeah, a lot of this guy's negs are from iPod customers over issues with batteries not holding their charge and problems with displays. I think I'll just go with the Phillips one.

I also don't want anything from Apple...lol...don't want to be one of the 'sheep' :D

You can just drag and drop from iTunes, I used to with my Walkman 8gb.

I picked up my first ever iPod the other week - an iPod Nano from HMV for £100. I think it's back to its full price now, but it's one of the most impressive little gadgets I've ever had. It makes my commute to work so much more pleasant - and I can store all my audiobooks on it too.

For full synch compatability and if you use the .aac file format rather than .mp3 when ripping CDs then you will need an iPod of some variety.

Also if you purchase from the iTunes store the format is .aac. This can be circumvented by burning a CD than ripping back as .mp3 - it's just cumbersome.

I've used iPods for a number of years and swear by them. I'm not interested in the fashionista side - the sound quality is far superior to most if not all competitors. Even my totally anti-iPod brother admits that the sound quality is better than his Creative!

Itunes will work with other players. Not sure how well the sync functions will work but I can use itunes music with my new motorola mobile phone.

Not true.

Loads of software to get non "iPods" to sync with iTunes - Google search will find a lot of that software. Also as previously stated "drag and drop"

Not used a non iPod or iPhone for along time but family members still use iTunes with Samsung MP3 players.
