iTunes and DRM

My iTunes Library includes a number of older downloads which are marked as 'Protected AAC Audio File', which means that they can only be played via an iTunes compatible player (iPod, iPhone etc) unless burned to a CD.
I would like to save a load to a USB stick to play through my car radio but if I try to do that it saves them as different files (.m4a etc) which won't work with other devices like my car radio.
Looking on the Internet it says that the DRM can be removed by deleting the download and then clicking on the 'cloud' icon to download it again (apparently Apple have now removed DRM?) ... I've deleted with the 'Keep the File' option ticked and when I click on the 'cloud' icon it comes back again but as Protected!
I can of course delete it and send the file to the Bin but if I do it's gone and there is no corresponding 'cloud' icon to click on, so I seem to be stuffed in trying to remove the DRM in the suggested way ... unless I am missing something.
Ideally I would like to save the 'Protected AAC Audio' files to a USB stick as mp3.
Anyone any helpful ideas please? :)

I just right clicked the few I had and used convert to MP3.

I wonder whether the cloud download only works when you have Apple Music Match.

I just get "protected files cannot be converted to other formats".

Hmm. I wonder whether it is related to the Match service subscription.

Possibly ... pay to buy, then pay to use :(

It looks like the old program was discontinued, and you require match now to do this. I think match is worth it to have it all in be cloud.

You could perhaps subscribe, convert and then cancel?

Can't you plug your iPhone straight into your car's USB port.

Good point, a stick just avoids having to use the lead and 'docking' the phone ... also annoying that I have limited access to something I bought! :)
