Around 8 months ago I stumbled across a band named 'Manchester Orchestra'.
I fell in love almost instantly.
Quick run through of what they're about:
They're all around 21 ish.
They're from Atlanta, Georgia.
They released their first album 'I'm like a virgin losing a child', despite the fact that previously they had fully completed an album 'Nobody sings anymore' but decided not to release it because it wasn't the musical direction they wanted to take.
The vocals and guitar are by a very talented scruff of a man 'Andy Hull', who wrote their first EP 'You brainstorm, I brainstorm, but brilliance needs a good editor' before he left high school.
They recently released their highly anticipated album 'Mean Everything to Nothing'.
They are musical storytellers of the highest calibre, and the euphoria, warmth, despair and full on emotion they provoke are beyond any other form of art I've encountered.
I'm yet to find out what 'I'm like a virgin losing a child' was about, but their most recent album 'Mean Everything to Nothing' tells the story of a mentally challenged girl in 11 parts. Fantastic.
However, that's not the point of this post.
Andy Hull also has a solo project in progress - 'Right Away, Great Captain!'
You might question the name, it will all make sense soon.
The solo project is meant to be a trilogy of album releases, the first 2 are complete:
-The Bitter End (2007)
-The Eventually Home (2008)
Now, Andy, being the storyteller he is, wrote these albums based upon a 15/16th Century Sailor.
The Bitter End is about the sailor in question walking in on his wife having sex with his brother, moments before he is set to travel to sea for 3 years with no contact with his family, and how he decides to get on the boat for lack of an idea on what to do.
The Eventually Home is about his time at sea, how he's coping with his emotions, and then as the album starts to close, he comes home, and finishes with him standing over his sleeping wife, unable to make a decision as to what to do.
I recently saw Andy perform 'The Eventually Home' in a small acoustic gig in London, the room not much bigger than my living room, candles on the small wooden tables.
I had goosebumps, and I was completely moved by the whole thing. It was an amazing night, and far far better than any of the big bands I've seen live. More passion, more realism, more emotion.
It's unlikely you'll be able to find much of the stuff online, but give the following links a try.

This might sound like a shameless spam attack.
If I can get 1, even 2 people aware of this band, it would make me feel better.
ps. Anyone who watches Grey's Anatomy might recognise 'Right Away, Great Captain!'s own 'What a Pity'
pps. If anyone has any other lesser known but fantastic bands let me know! I'm always on the prowl
