It doesn't offend me....let's face it, no one here has that power personally.
It was the "I'm OK but others need help" whiff which amused me.

You see, there is a difference between bullying and a bit of mickey taking. Two different things although the method used may be the same.
Setting up a Facebook group and ostracising someone because they're ginger. Insulting them at every turn and making their life miserable. That's bullying.
Treating someone as a peer, but occasionally offering a jibe along the lines of "We're not going out today, too sunny for you, ginge" is mickey taking.

Forgive me for saying that seems like a dangerous viewpoint.

What seems to you a gentle jest may appear very different to its target. Perhaps they've been the butt of half a dozen such comments already on that day. In such a case, it could well be yet another insult that adds to their misery. You mean no harm but you do it anyway.

That's why I think our lawmakers are doing a good thing with all the equality and respect legislation that has been enacted since the 1965 Race Relations Act. It's not what you mean that matters but the effect it has.
 
TBH I'm not really sure what this is all about, its been generally accepted and they have been the butt of many jokes, over many years, that blond females are thick / lack common sense and more.
Especially those from Essex.
Now, that is racist ( or at the very least locationalist) Sexist and derogatory.
But you don't hear them kicking off.

I think the main crux of it is that if you're ribbing someone in jest, then you know them. Therefore you would know if it's a big issue.
I will happily take the mick out of a mate for being ginger, fat or funny looking.
However, if I knew it was at the end of a long line of insults then I wouldn't. It's all about context and balance.

As much as I would love a "Be nice to each other" legislation, that's only going to be possible in an unobtainable utopia. Not everyone in the world is going to get along, and we need to prepare our children for that. This is why I think it's wrong to point discussion towards the method of how people treat each other. It's the motive and delivery that should be the target of legislation.

To say "Admit The Matrix 2 was rubbish or I'll beat you like a ginger stepchild" for a laugh is completely different to actually beating a child because he's ginger. That would of course be unacceptable.

It's not impossible to laugh at or find humour in things while finding the actual situation abhorrent.

Great example! And for how it should work in real life...

My Mrs was recently sat on a promotion panel where one of the candidates used the phrase 'as popular as a ginger step-child', everyone laughed but during the closing she had to point out that she does indeed have a ginger step son she loves to bits, poor bloke was a bit perturbed by that :D

We take the mickey relentlessly in our house, it helps kids to get used to the fact it'll happen, and to prepare their responses, no one is safe and no subject taboo. Bullying is a very different thing.

And my pet hate is the 'offence is in the eye of the beholder'! Feel free to be offended, but don't expect the world to stick up for you if your offendedness is just attention seeking.
