its official! alpha 290 and 390!

Blank page for me, but it's on dyxum as well.

Don't see the point of these at all, Sony already has a plethora of entry level DSLRs.

The 500/4 and Zeiss 24/2 are on their way. More would be good though, and the A7xx/A9xx - mainly to drive down the price of the A900 so I can afford one!

I think there should be a camera before September ready for Photokina but from what I hear it wont be a direct A700 replacement.

there is meant to be the a700 replacement unveiled this year along with a mini version being unveiled at around the same time, i think its around autumn that they were going to be released.

Well whatever Sony release it will finally have HD movie.

what will they do after this ? I mean - the numbers ? will the next entry level sony be a291.5 ? they can't use 300 !!

Not like they've done with the Xperia X10....and now the Xperia X10 mini I hope!:p

I thought the A900 was the replacement for the A700 :/

you should know that Rudy! I don't even like Sony (apart from the Nikon innards ;)!) and I knew that! :D

The sensors are great! Inside every Nikon theres a Sony!

nah inside every Nikon there's a Sony ;) how are you finding my 50mm? I miss it :(

the 50mm is beautiful, i dont know why you aint brought one yourself. i might have it up for grabs soon when i buy the 50mm f1.4.

i have four months off now as i have finished my GCSE's and now need a part time job, and then i can buy the 50mm f1.4 and hopefully a 90/100mm f2.8 macro

yeah let me know when you do I'd love to own it again :)

tbh it would just be nice if they concentrated on low light performance.
all i see is that the 290 is the 200 but more mp so even more noise.

I thought that the A850 was the replacement for the A700?

Similar functions AND full frame sensor!!

seems like the logical step anyway

The 850 was a sort of "budget" 900 I think. Good value for full frame though.

I really do wish that the 700 replacement would show up - when I bought my A450, the manager at jessops told me that the last few 700s went for £399 - could have kicked myself for not chasing one down.

It's been so long in coming, the speculation has even ground to a halt over at dyxum.

yeah considering they haven't made a new mid range body since sony have actually took over the minolta camera division, i think its ridiculous how many entry level bodies they have brought out.

IMO Sony are stuck in a rut... I think they make good quality entry-mid range cameras but are a little lacking in the enthusiast-pro areas.

The problem is... its the lower end consumer that is more likely to buy Sony. Professionals are much more likely to buy Canon/Nikon and most wont be persuaded otherwise.

Now, as a sony executive, do you invest millions into R&D of a high end camera aimed at professionals that may not get bought by many, or do you invest in the entry level cameras that are much more affordable to consumers?

They have almost created a trench, and subsequently got stuck in it. Pro togs see Sony as inferior to the Canons and Nikons of the world, so dont buy them, and Sony are accepting that and not trying to break into the high end marketplace.

IMO sony should release an A950 or similar, aimed at the Pro togs, with better high ISO performance, thus competing with the high end Canons and Nikons, but to do so would cost a lot of money, and may not be succesful, but if they did it, they may be pleasantly surprised!

TBH canon and nikon are nothing special, they were just there at the time before other brands arised, i like nikon and if i was to move brand it would be nikon however i love my sony and the lenses kick ass especially the carl ziess.

They could always release a Sony Beta range , then a Sony Charlie range, then a Sony Delta range and then a Sony Echo range and so on!!!!

Perhaps Sony should stop making sensors for nikon and concentrateon doing their own to perfection. Sony have the means to make a killer MP camera with amazing low light iso but dont. Wonder if its because nikon make them so much money?

Alpha refers to the lens mount. I hope they don't change it!

entry levels sells. as for the a700 replacement - I think they are working hard on it because they want to have an amazing video in it. + they have finished with the NEX'es so I think something good is coming out next.

heh ! I just had that though as well. similar to BMW's and their F series .
oh ! and I'm waiting to see what porsche will do with the 911, same stuff - 930, 964, 993, 996, 997 (do you see how they are running out of the numbers and starting to use the next one ? lol. + I think that there are spy photos of 998.)

yes i agree with this statement, i remember hearing on google somewhere that sony's advantage is that they make everything from the internals to the lenses (i dont know how this is an advantage but apparently it is!) sony need to make an a900 with brilliant high ISO, when the a900 first came out alot of pro's who used nikon and canon were interviewed and actually claimed that they would buy the sony a900 if it werent for the crappy noise issue. and these werent just togs these were togs with decades of experience and loads of kit and yet they still admitted to buying sony stuff, there is a definite market for it.

I believe that they might have an agreement, that - Nikon makes low light stuff, Sony makes sensors and crappy lowlight cameras but with great normal light abilities + bigger MP numbers. Or we might see Nikon/sony in future like sony erricson. Sony is an amazing corp, they won't go without a win.

sony really do need to do something with the low light issues, i dont mind it as such because all my work only requires a max ISO of around 400 however i never trust bumping up the ISO and always have to have a longer shutter speed or wider aperture.

A700 (or 850 or 900) would be the answer. Or the 4xx and 5xx.

The entry level CCD sensor cameras are sharper in bright light but the CMOS sensors score in low light.

Agree entirely. The sensor in my 450 compared to the 200 is miles ahead in terms of low light performance.

Unfortunately, mud sticks, and it might take a while for them to shake off this perception for the newer models.

yeah, i heard about the a5XX having good ISO also, it is ashame that sony's reputation for high ISO isnt good.
