Hi,

I've thrown a cup of coffee across my computer desk, and in rescuing everything (all OK), and wiping my mouse with a towel, I've ended up with a broad white bar across the 1st 1/8th of the screen, top to bottom. It's not a fault, I just don't have a clue how to get rid!!!!:bang: :bang:

I've tried everything, but to no avail.

It has three sections:

top to bottom,

Folder Tasks

Other places

My docs.

Each section has a drop down menu.

Anybody have any ideas about how to get rid of it, loathesome article!!

Thanks.

Is it your taskbar made vertical???

Show us!!

hit the printscreen key, the open your favourite photo software package, then paste it in there and save it as a jpeg then show us :D

Printscreen button does nothing!

pritnscreen key just copies it to your clipboard, you need to hit the printscreen key the go into photoshop and do edit > paste

How do I access clipboard from within PS??

I don't know where to find it - is a programme? I've never heard of it.

every time you do edit copy you copy to your clipboard

from ps simply go to the EDIT menu then PASTE

You don't need to Doug just open a new blank document in PS and do edit paste or Ctrl V

Do this ....

When the bar is on your screen click the PRINTSCREEN button - nothing will happen.

Open your photo program (photoshop, PSP, Paint .. etc).

Go to edit then paste. (You may need to go to file - new - edit - paste).

Image of your screen will appear.

Save as a jpg and post on here.

The chances are it is just your task bar .... if this is the case, scroll slowly over it until you see a double headed arrow. When you see this, drag it down to make bar smaller. Then click on the bar and drag it down to bottom of screen - i.e. make it horizontal.

Hope this helps.

Anth.

It's the wide bar at the left of the screen.

Looks like some bizzaro toolbar

Incedentaly where is your normal toolbar that should live along the bottom edge?

You do know that you can add more toolbars to wherever you desire.

If this an extra toolbar (not sure) then right click in the toolbar (white bit) and deselect all of the menu options. When all menus are disabled the toolbar will disapear.

I've already tried the above. But thanks anyway.

The bottom toolbar is on 'auto hide'

The easiest route is to do a system restore Doug.

Start Menu>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore.

Follow the on-screen instructions, You should be able to go back a couple of days and all will be well.:)

That did the trick, thanks. I was a bit fraught. It's the first time I've had to do a systems restore on a week old computer:eek:

:woot:  good o'l buster the trucker.

 ^^^^^^

Glad you got it sorted Doug..:)

Yep, so am I, though the cure was somewhat radical:eek:

I'd like to know what caused it in the first place though.

Coffee

you probably could of removed it if you had right clicked the normal toolbar that you have on autohide, then picked toolbars from the menu that appears and removed/unticked them from there.

It's back!:bang:

I don't want to do yet another system restore... any ideas??

I found 2 reports of the same problem via google. One had no answer and the other said it was down to a corrupted user profile.

No idea how you fix it but it does not seem to be something simple that you might have done by accident.

That's strange!

I haven't done anything that might lead to a corrupted user profile, and the software suite is completely new.

It actuall happened this morning as I was loading my new copy of 'Lightroom'.

I suppos I can live with it. It's not compromising the functionality of the computer.:gag:

Looks like spyware crap or virus pretending to be a windows function to me.

What was the last thing you installed before it happened?

Just run MS windows defender over the machine and use some good virus software and leave a full virus scan going over night or something. If it is 9 times out of 10 it will catch it.

It will most probably be using the webpage desktop feature of windows. You can find this by going into display properties/desktop then click customise desktop then the web tab. This is where you can make a web page part of your desktop and how the "whatever it is" is invading yours ;)

The bit you see is the Common Tasks toolbar, that should only be shown in folders.

If you go Here it has a small reg file (number 15 on the list), to correct the registry entry to remove it from the desktop :)

:bonk: I should have just searched the net instead of guessing shouldn't I :D

Question is how that registry entry gets set in the first place as he says this isn't the first time it has happened to him

I would still run scans

Thanks gentlemen, it's gone.

Sie - I used Windows Defender, and AVG, full suite, and it didn't find anything.

I run scans daily, just in case.

Nice one

I notice it's windows media centre edition your using? It may well be a bug that a certain sequence of events cause the registry entry to become in that state. I doubt there are many update/fixes being done for that now but it may well be addressed in a windows update patch. Probably not but it may be worth a try if you havent already done so.
