Yes
the 17-40L is here! It's a beast, especially with the lens hood on! Can't wait to get an opportunity to get out and get to grips with it now. Next on the list, 70-200L...

Well its nearly the weekend so playtime is not far away!!

Have fun with it :)

Yeah great lens, build quality is awesome as with all L series lenses. One thing you may find is the hood isnt really that great at protecting the lens from bright lights due to it being so wide, I find the hood from my 24-105 or the 24-70 to be a little better.

See how you go though and congrats on the lens :)

congrats
must say it's my "default" lens
reliability and quality

what's next on your shopping list?

If i can find a good price then it's the 70-200 F2.8L, if not it's the F4L. The best i've found so far is around $1170 for a new F2.8 :D

Congrats :) Loving my new 17-40 too ;) Really is just a nice lens to hold and use.

Congrats. .. 17-40mm was my first L lens too

:lol::lol::lol:

OOh sorry to laugh at you Dizzy... but if you think 17-40mm feels like a beast ... just wait until you get a feel of the 70-200mm F2.8!

lol i know! I remember looking at the 17-40 and the 70-200 side by side in a shop and thinking the 17-40 was a tiddler! With only the kit lens to compare it too it looks massive. Better step up the gym work in preparation for the real beast...

can I just ask, why did you guys with 17-40 pick it over the 24-105?

Trying to decide which to get.

Indeed! It can feel very heavy after a while, I am getting used to it now and the upside is all my other lenses feel like air after using it!

Well for me Michael I chose the 17-40mm to use as a wide angle, mainly with landscapes in mind.
On the 5D (full frame) at the bottom end it is pretty wide.

wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of my price range lol. got anything for 45p? lol u laugh but my mate picked up an Nikon SLR lens from a car boot for a POUND... not sure wat it was but he said it was good, a widow getting rid of stuff

For me it was because the 30d has a 1.6x sensor so the 24 doesn't really give me a decent wide angle option. I'm getting the 70-200L and then at somepoint i'm sure i'll get something to plug the gap to act as more of a walk-around (24-70 maybe?).

Another idea is to buy a 17-55mm F2.8 EW-83J hood for it as it fits the 17-40L perfectly that hood you get with it does nothing on a crop sensor.
Now the Canon 17-55mm lens hood is expensive, so i bought a 3rd party one of ebay for £8 that feels and fits just as good as Canon orignal ones here a quick pic.

Top tip! Thanks i'll keep my eyes open for one of those. Just sat in the airport waiting for a long flight back to manchester to see the wife and kids for the holidays so the first shots with it look like being something frosty!
