Having only owned my 550D for a couple of months and thinking it was great with just the kit lens I came across this forum. Now after seeing pictures, reading the review and noting everyones thoughts on it I just ordered myself a 'nifty fifty' as everyone calls it or the 50mm 1.8 prime lens. Prime? until about 2 weeks ago I didn't even know what that was!

I think I've just started my decent on a slippery slope...;)

A very slippery slope, but enjoy the ride because your bank manager will, lol

So slippery its tooo hard to stop.
I was in the same boat as you, bought a 400D with kit lens and yep £3.5K later(ok not alot to what some people have spent) i still want more.

Spike

This is only the beginning! (Insert Evil laugh here)
Hope your other half is understanding!

Get yourself an ice pick and some crampons, your on a very slippery slope now. If you don't get a grip your in seriuos trouble.

I should know I've just hit financial ground zero :D

A grip could be next on the shopping list!

I'm surprised I don't see adverts alongside the 'stop smoking' posters with 'get help for your lens addiction, call 0800xxxxxx

I got into dslr 's just over 2 years ago... and I'm totally helplessly. Addicted

Try not to get sucked into the constant thought that is...............

"Oooh that xxxxxxxxxxx will definatley help me acheive better images, and it's only £400" :D

Yeah, the thing to remember is gear doesn't make better images. You will have more limitations with some gear, but no matter how good it is there will still be some limitations.

Keeping things simple and having some limitations actually helps you grow as a photographer. If you can get great images using basic equipment you will have achieved in succeeding with the essence of what makes an image worthwhile, and that's not the finer technical details.

Having said all that I love gear and need help. ;)

Haha, when I first arrived on this forum I had a Canon 20D and a Sigma 18-200 and that was it, no accessories or lighting whatsoever ;) You dont want to know how much I have spent since then

You have no idea how slippery this particular slope is :D

The one great thing about SLR photography is alot of lenses look VERY very similar ;)

There are also the 'I borrowed it' and 'I rented it' diversions too.

Have to say, it's a great slippery slope to be on though :)

It's amazing how quickly you get sucked in to spending money when you go the DSLR route and have a massive want list.

I've already started work on the misses ;), dropping subtle hints that the Nikon 24-70mm (over £1k) would be a great addition to my growing collection. Hopefully by Christmas, she'll come round (mainly to shut me up :naughty:)

Fingers crossed!!!

the trick is to find something she wants you to do that needs the kit - This is somethng i picked up from my other hobby, woodwork

"of course I can refit and refresh the kitchen darling, but i'll need a tablesaw and planer thicknesser - they are only a few hundred quid (well more like £1k tbh) each, compared to the cost of a new kitchen thats nothing... its an investment in our future ;) "

" well I need the nikkor 24-70 to take great pictures of the kids for your great aunt flo to have on her wall "

"of course i'd be happy to do the publicity shots for your Am dram group darling, but i'll need a new flash gun"

" do your sisters wedding photography , of course darling but i'll need to get a second 5Dmk2 you wouldnt want me to risk having no back up and spoiling her big day"

alternately you can wait til she's spent the national debt of brazil on dresses and shoes , then say - "thats no problem darling, after all I love you ......... btw I was thinking of getting a new camera its under a thousand pounds and a real bargain"

I already do that with DIY!!! :D Just managed to upgrade the jigsaw when asked to refit the skirts as the old one "vibrated" too much and so I couldn't get an accurate cut.

:whistling:

LOL I started with a 350D and kit lens, a few bits of cheap ebay stuff and was happy.

Now the list is a 40D, 5D2, 1d3 and a few L glass lenses. Add to that the full 4 head lighting kit in the loft, tripods, bags and other ancileries.

Now I'm starting to slim down my kit with the view to seting up my spare room as a basic studio, more for fun than thoughts of more than family and mates.

If you have no other vices in life why not I say.

Oh and I got rid of the wife 9 years ago so I don't have that problem.

All sounds very familiar.:D Enjoy it. Only do it if you can afford to and if your family don't suffer for it. ;)
If you can meet both criterea then have fun!!! :D
I thoroughly love my photography and continue to learn with every shot I take.

Kev.

My trick is the 'What? No this isn't a new lens, I've had it ages'. Works with shoes too

Unless I buy something like a great big L class lens it will probably work. He only noticed my Tamron lens a year later, mainly because I put the lens hood on it to go to the photography meet.

Instructions to one of my mates.... "If I die suddenly, for gawd's sake, don't let her indoors sell my camera gear for what she thinks I paid for it!"

There is only one escape, and that is probably another more expensive / involving hobby down a steeper slope.

From 30D I quickly accumulated a stack of lenses, flashguns, 2x 1-series (why?), and I now got an urge for 16-35L. I really hope medium format doesn't bite me too soon.

It's like chocolate.....
Never mind the question, gear is the answer :naughty:
I've been on this slope for decades - and still sliding.
The kit changes, the urge remains the same; can't give up fags either...
Never mind eh

Photography is just one of those hobbies that will have never ending kit and theres always something different to try and buy!

Lord, go out and take photos instead of fretting about equipment :)

Photos are what matters, go and tell me a story :)

Blimey, little over two years ago I was buying an Olympus E420 because at under £300 I figured I could justify it to the wife.

This week I took delivery of my Canon 100mm L IS macro, joining my 5D Mark 2, 24-70L, 70-200L IS II, 17-40L...oh, and the 50mm f1.8 ;)

Slippery slope is an understatement  Now the wife knows to say 'just buy it' when I mention any kit

Enjoy your gear :)

Oh dear, like the OP I am now itching for a 70-300mm and a nifty fifty! I must wait til christmas, I must wait til christmas...
