Edit My Images
Yes
Last week I had a photograph and article printed in a local paper, with my byline.

This week a glossy monthly magazine wants to print one of my pictures in a forthcoming issue, plus I have a paid shoot to produce corporate images for a company's website.

I like good weeks.:D

The magazine isn't paying but it does increase my profile and helps with my expanding portfolio, which is generating more commercial work, which does.

Do the printers who print the magazine do it for free?
Do the journos in the office not get paid?
Do the adverts that go in the magazine go in for free?

I thought not.

Will the bank let you pay your mortgage late because your profile is raised?

I didn't think so.
So everyone else is getting paid but YOU.

Even if it is a miserly sum that will only buy two pints of beer, you should charge SOMETHING, just to keep the precedent set.

I appreciate your sentiment, but it isn't quite like that in this case..

My main employment is (currently) elsewhere in 2 other businesses. Photography at present is an tiny (but growing) part of my income. It's a hobby that is becoming a business but I will ensure it stays as much fun as it is as a hobby.

One of my other businesses is working to the value of a large 5 figure sum with the publisher and the other is getting free publicity from this.

It was a conscious decision not to charge for THIS particular item as I am using it to increase commercial awareness of the photography side of things.

Call it a loss leader if you want to use a business analogy.

I have already picked up a paid commercial shoot worth £1000 as a result of this so it seems to be working out thank you.:)

FYI I'm not a naive person

I'm 48 and have successfully set up and run businesses for other people turning over many mllions of pounds per year.

I am now self employed and run (including my small photographic concern) a total of 4 businesses myself and now how to market my businesses in order to increase my turnover.

I see no sign of recession in any of my businesses and have work booked in two until the end of the year at least.

So mortgage IS paid , I'm getting a darn site more than 2 pints of beer, I'm booking a luxury cruise for next year and I'm happy that my profile is being raised, slowly, but surely.:D

True. Start of slow and keep it fun. Worrying about getting paid all the time (especially when you're successful in other areas) is only going to cause headaches et al.

Good for you chap.

I wish I had the same amount of drive and ability!

Being lazy and rubbish businessman do not make or a healthy bank balance lol.
