Read a very revealing article in The Observer about how courier companies weasel out of paying compensation
Who knew that Hermes for example won't cough up for Cameras and Lenses, excerpt below from a massive list

Full list of excluded items
Excluded Items are goods which Hermes will carry but, are sent at your own risk.
Hermes will not compensate you for loss, damage or late delivery of Non Compensation Items.
Cameras and Lenses

Royal Mail Special Delivery exclusions list is pretty short, so I would recommend sending things this method and going overboard on packaging.

I agree Andrew, wasn't about to start using Hermes, but wanted to warn anyone who might think about it

Probably one of the reasons why they are quite cheap. I suppose one pays one's money and takes one's choice.

Hermes must have changed policy, they paid out on a £700 lens a couple of years ago for me that they lost.

Think its because of their drop off locations, not very secure and greater chance of damage
So yes they must have because the article I read included a tale of woe about a lens

Was wondering why anyone would use Hermes for valuable cameras or lenses. View attachment 262044

I send a lot of stuff with hermes, they get slated often but they've never lost or broken anything of mine in 5 years , I do pack it well and each package has an address label as well as their label

list of exclusions is certainly growing with claims they are getting. After the courier (can't remember name) destroyed 2 car fire extinguishers these are now in no-compensation list. Some couriers are only good for sending heavy crap like salvage engine parts.

@LongLensPhotography : Heavy car parts are excluded as well......

They are, but at least they are worth very little and only receiver really needs them which makes it an OK deal.

Hermes basically do not cover anything in their list, I had this issue when we were trying out courier companies and testing their policies to see who would be a good fit, fortunately Hermes would have 2-3 of our test parcels disappear every week so it was very clear who we were not going to use and they refused to pay out for any declared content for any goods we might be shipping even though each parcel was a total loss. I tried to ask the agent dealing with a few of our cases what IS covered under their policy and reading the list they couldn't answer it.

Eventually they paid out for a couple of items after one "lost" package was scanned by a driver 3 times as delivered (how they can scan a package which has supposedly been delivered to a customer 3 times and accepted every time) and I threatened to get the police involved as it was basically stealing my customer's post.

It begs the question, Who is the best carrier to use with least exclusions.? apart from royal mail.

It is likely that MPB have alternative insurance methods to protect goods in transit rather than relying on couriers own for damage rather than loss.
Indeed, I'm sure that may be true ... however the list of prohibited items for this carrier is very surprising!

Lost is not broken. Their policy stated broken when they lost a lens I sent a few years ago, took some arguing but I got compensation in the end, was only a £200 lens but it was their fault for losing it.

Their policy now states ‘Hermes will not compensate you for loss, damage or late delivery of Non Compensation Items.’

When I sent mine I bought the postage and enhanced insurance through eBay, if they don’t cover items they shouldn’t even be listed as a delivery option IMO

Thanks for posting that. Useful info.

A longtime ago someone I knew worked at a Mail Order company. A customer got so fed up with the lack of resolution on an order they used the reply paid label...

...to send a car clutch

that cost quite a lot!

Hermes deliver for Asos who my daughters buy from on a regular basis, I would never use them.
We have left notes and sent instructions with orders to put deliveries in our shed then lock the shed door and then post the key through our letterbox for security instead this is what they do, not as bad as my mates experience where they actually left the parcels in his bin.... on bin day.
I should really have taken it from the other side as you get a better view of all the parcels.
