At the moment I have an D300 - had it around 2 years now and have probably only taken about 5k on it - I've only ever used a 50mm 1.8D on it.

It's literally the best camera I have ever used, I can use it with my eyes closed the controls are so perfect, the grip, the AF, image quality. But..I still miss my old Olympus E-510 and looking up at my OM-40 I have the OM-D urge...I could sell the D300 and put the rest towards a used OM-D and a prime - or even a kit lens and an adaptor for my original OM lenses.

Am I :cuckoo: ?? There's rarely any logic in what I do

Sounds like you're happy with your D300 and the results you get from it.

If photography is a hobby for you and the pictures are just what you have after a day's shooting then the most important thing is the enjoyment you have whilst you're out doing your photography.

If the Olympus will make your day more enjoyable - go for it.

The things I liked about the Olympus were - half the weight of my Nikon, substantially smaller body with IS built in, still a very premium build quality and excellent battery life.

The D300 is an old camera and looking at some of the testing, the current 16mp M43 sensors are pushing out stunning shots. I just like the idea of going back to something smaller and easy to chuck in my rucksack/manbag

Reason enough. You won't be losing anything by changing (other than some money) but you will be gaining. There does seem some logic to it even if you didn't think there was :)

Hire an OM-D for a week and try them side by side.

It's usually better to be getting a completely different type of camera as an "as well as" rather than an "instead off", so trying them side by side you can clearly see what works best for you

Never used the OM-D, but I recently made similar decision. I sold my 24-70L and got X-E1 to use as my everyday camera. It now gets more use than 5D3 because its small and light and I can take it with me all the time. :)

The size and weight difference was enough reason to get a smaller camera system. :)
