It's just typical isn't it? You go out somewhere and spot another togger and get chatting to them and come home wanting something bigger and better!!! :D

I was out today in quite a remote place where I live, and about 150 yards away from me was from what I could make out another snap happy user. I didn't pay much attention at first thinking the last thing he probably wants is another tog distracting him, however after walking in his direction he nodded and called me over as he noticed my SLR slung over my shoulder as well as the lens bag I was also carrying. After chatting for a while I asked him about his SLR(a Nikon D300) and how he gets on with it as well as your typical tog chat, he gave his camera and said "have a go" which at first I was hesistant as it was not mine, and that I'd never really used a Nikon before as I've near enough always used Canon SLR's. I was quite surprised how easy it was to use considering that some of the most often used controls I use were scattered about on it in different places. So now I'm debating on whether or not to sell off my 450D I have along with some of the lenses I used on it, and put the money towards a D300.

I've had the same thing happen with guitars, for anyone who plays the guitar there's a term called GAS which is widely used on guitar internet forums which stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome which is basically the need for bigger better things and continual purchasing for the holy grail effect or for a particular item in mind- could this be it?? I've seen a few people on here fall foul of it.

Michael.

I bought the D300 over the Canon 40D because the Nikon was more intuitive to use. Now Mr.DonnaM has a 50D, I still prefer my Nikon. Go on, come over to the Dark Side!

The term GAS is used across most internet forums...basically, anything that is a hobby and can involve changing (or upgrading as some would say ;)).

could this be it?

In a word, yes. :)

this seems to happen a lot that i've heard of, a few people i know have used a D300, D700 or D3 and instantly wanted nikons due to how easy they are to use.

You see it, you want it...:D

Luke...it is your destiny....

As I'm being forced to get a new camera (long story but its the D200 broken thread), I'm tempted to get a D300.

A body like the D300 is a genuine photographers tool: the weight, handling, build, speed and usability and night and day compared to consumer bodies, of any brand. Won't necessarily take better pictures on its own.

... which is why people here are always advsing the newcomers to put down their DSLR magazines and get into the shops to try them out before they buy ;).

I was all set to buy a Canon 50D as my main DSLR, until I picked up a D700 :bang:. An expensive, but very rewarding, decision :naughty:!

I went from D40 to D200 and it really did feel like a proper bit of kit, I find I do more work in light room after though, and the D40 still never ceases to amaze me for its picture quality. I was back to the D40 today and it felt so amateur in comparison.

a D300 is still a consumer body - you have to handle a real pro body to feel the difference.

Its true, I have a D200 then I bought a D1x as my second body. It is as big a jump from the D200 as the D200 is over the D40. Unfortunately I can't afford the D3x so I'll have to settle for a D700 :)

D3x is for studio work - you should look at the D3 - it is superb - and leaves the D300 and even the D700 standing

I am about to buy a D700 and 24-70 if I bought the D3 I would only have a nifty 50 and AFS105f2.8 to use it with :)

BUT you'd have a D3 - if you don't get it you'll ALWAYS aspire to it - lenses can come later.

The D700 will do everything that the D3 will and the 24-70 will be worth more than the D3 in about 4 years

but it doesn't feel the same :) - the 24-70 is fantastic - I got one recently.

just go to a shop and hold both bodies! You'll get the same pic quality from a d700 BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE THE BUILD QUALITY OR QUALITY FEEL OF A FULL SIZE PRO BODY. (oops sorry about the caps!)

It's also £1200 more expensive.........

i've held both and would get the D3 if I had enough money to but the glass is more important than the feel. If I bought the D3 I would only have my primes the difference in price between the D3 and D700 will cover the 24-70.

and worth every penny.

I got my D3 bodies second hand with only a few hundred clicks on them and they were each £300 more than a new D700 - well worth it. Even less if you factor in the cost of a grip for the d700. tHAT WAS BEFORE THE CRAZY PRICE INCREASES THIS YEAR!

Oh you mean its bigger! Size isn't everything, after all :lol::lol:

i think its quite funny how there's this thread, and then there's a thread about the importance of good glass next to each other

I'm only jealous, more a case of not being able to afford it rather than preferring a D700 :)

Like I said I would like a D3 but I would rather put my money into glass. It is an investment. All my Nikon lenses are worth about what I paid for them or slightly more. My D200 is worth about a third! I am planning on photography being a long term hobby so I am spending on glass in preference. I will get the D700 at the end of September when I have enough for the camera and lens (hopefully the D700x/D700s/D800 will be out by then !)

don't get me thinking about about the D700x again, D700-D3 upgrade path I can't justify, D700-D700x if the rumours are true (24mp) could be worth it for studio work :woot:

I hope it has the hinged LCD off the 5000 and greater Mpix but not sure it will be the D3x sensor, there are some suggestions that it might be about 16-18Mp

Don't understand why you'll need more than 12 mp - anything more is overkill for most people.
Hell I still get great results from my D2Hs bodies - and they are 4.1MP!!

I don't need more than 12Mp BUT the crop sensor part of the sensor is much smaller than the whole sensor so if they up the sensor to 18Mp then I get about 7Mp for a crop lens ! I am only saying that the new camera may well be out by then so it is effectively a free upgrade. I am not about to sit there with £3000 in the bank waiting months for the new camera to come out but if it IS out I will benefit :)

According to Nikon the D300 is a professional body. Or maybe you're right and they're wrong and it isn't a real pro body after all, just hiding in there hoping no one will notice

Or maybe my tactile sensitivity is more subtle than yours, because there is a big difference already in my hands and in usage between a more basic Nikon model, even a D90 which is top of the consumer range, and a D300.

But this thread isn't about 'which is the more pro'. It's about whether the guy wishes to shift to a D300 and what the advantages might be. One set of advantages would be as I outlined.

I had D300 and didn't like them - each to their own though

I've got a D300 and D700, they are both great camera's and definately worth the jump from D80/90 consumer range...
