I am driving to Milan and Rome in about 10 weeks, and have SEEN lots of shots of the Coloseum with nobody in the shots does anybody know what stupid O' clock time I have to get up to get this shot.
Also any ideas what to shoot apart from the obvious.#
Lucky me gets to drive 2 differnt routes across the Alps as well :woot:

I have been to both, and I did not like Milan... could be just me though. The cathedral is nice but so many people trying to give you popcorn for the birds, tie'ing crap to your arm so that you have to buy it, etc.

I am out that way in September for the Monza F1 :) Stay up Lake Como way!!!

The Last Supper is in Milan

Other than that, not sure.... I would go up towards the Lakes, stunning area!!!

I was working in Milan last year and agree with everything you say about the place not to struck but then there are a lot of nice villages nearby.

We only spent a few short hours in Milan, but there is a really attractive covered arcade that is near the Duomo, and the Duomo itself has the option of getting up to the roof if I recall correctly..

With the right exposure settings (lots of seconds) helped probably by neutral density filters, you should be able to get some pictures, even with a few people around, without them being captured by the sensor.

Cheers I think I will be trying every exposure setting there is.

Apart from having an exposure so long everyone who moves is so blurred they don't register, so can also...

Shoot several from a tripod at more 'normal' exposures, and providing the people are moving simply layer them with 'Align' in PS and then erase the people through to the un-peopled part of the image on another layer - this is basically how those shots of the same person in an image lots of times are done

To ensure people move enough - shout 'FIRE' lots of times

Been to Rome quite a few times but never ever seen the Coloseum with no people. Maybe early morning while the locals are having an espresso? Those Roman centurians always seem to be there early and watch out for the Japanes tour parties, theres always hundreds in them :bang:

I can tell you how to get in and beat the queues with a free tour guide though ;)

I was in the Milan region last week and would generally echo what most say, particularly getting to the Lakes.

With regards to the Duomo I don't think there is a best time to find it people less. I went at lunch time and then 8 hrs later, and it was almost still as busy! It's inevitable these shots will have people in them, and if you look at most Duomo postcards ect, they also have people in them.

But Dave's idea re.multiple pics is a good idea, and would be particularly so for the arcade trapper mentioned.
Getting on the Duomo roof gives scope for some skylines, but be prepared to p'shop out cranes ect. Some of the buildings near being renovated too, so their covers may render a photo less authentic.

With regards to the Colosseum, be aware that it sees to be opera season soon, and there may be events being held in the site itself - as it was for the Verona arena.

What sort of settings would you recommend to take pics so people are blurred and register
