This is exactly the same sort of thing that got Jean Charles de Menezes killed.

Everyone is treated as a "terrorist" first, and ask questions later.

Soon, nobody is allowed to carry a bag around anymore, because bags can be used to contain a bomb, or some other WMD.

After that, everyone will just have to walk around without thick coats cause they can have bombs strapped on themselves.

The PCSO's are on a power trip, and that's the truth of it.

If it is genuinly shown that photography has been used as part of attack planning, or that the current PCSO actions are sanctioned by senior officers, or bought in as part of well thought through legislation then I'll support them. Absolutely, and I would also support your right to decline, I never said the student didnt have the right to act the way she did (within the current law), I always thought it pointless and argumentative and tbh a waste of her time, life's too short, we each act and take the consequences.
What I would not condone is the Police/PCSO acting illegally or heavy handed and in this case they were both and as such should have to answer for their actions.

It could all have been so easily avoided though :)

Yes, avoid it, and the PCSO just goes on telling everyone else he sees on the street to stop taking photographs. HE is doing something wrong, and if no one tells him, he'll just keep on doing it wrong.

Quite happy to 'assist' as its probably never/rarely going to happen so it interferes with me only a little, however, if every time I get my camera out in the street I am going to be 'questioned' I would see that infinging my freedom too much, so I'd be an anarchist :)

Democracy - doesnt exist, a bunch of people get elected and do what they want, we kick them out cos we didnt like what they did, which was different to what they said they would do and another lot get put in and do the same.
That's not democracy in my view.

But what transpired wont change anything, the report will get buried under 'riding down a one way street/public order' banner and his actions regarding the photography will get lost.

The time might have been better spent showing ID etc then writing a letter to his superior, copying to the local rag and a cc to the Police Complaints authority.

I think there's an element of truth there, but I don't hear stories of 'students' wearing rucksacks being stopped and searched at the whim of the PSCO 'Plastic-Plods'...
A little more training required perhaps, beyond the basic 'How to Wear a Menacing Utility-Belt' course...?

Hi, I don't usually involve myself in theses types of arguments, you can't win. Everyone has their own view.. I have not read through all the posts so forgive me if it has been posted before.. The police generally deal with liars and ne'erdo wells everyday.. When they ask some one a simple question they assume (rightly or wrongly) that they are being lied to. If every cop took what was told to them as gospel there would be a lot of empty prisons.. The prisons are full of innocent people who "never done it". The best way to gather intelligence is to talk to people. It is no hardship to give your details and show them your footage. I'm sure if it was a Carabinieri the young lady was talking to, she would have been more responsive. They may not have as many CCtv cameras in other countries, but they do have more armed police, water canons, less restrictions on the use of batons and CS/Parva spray. I'd rather be talked to politely than batoned.

My opinion probably goes against the grain here but the thing I have noticed in all footage of people being stopped is that people get a rather curt response they are asked nicely and politely (not maybe the italian lady) the police keep calm and are constantly told they do not have the right etc etc ....

I have one question if they are doing nothing wrong why not just show that and be nice and guess what they get let go instead get uppity and wonder why the police are heavier handed. what will you all think if some terrorist is caught taking pics etc etc and it is only proven AFTER the act of terror that they did it because the police were too worried about offending someone?

seriously get some perspective show respect to the guys doing a hard job out there and trying to strike a balance, show respect to the places being shot ask the people behind the desk do you mind I am x doing a project on blah blah blah ie common sense and courtesy and bingo nine out of ten times they let you shoot, react like these do with an attitude you get it back ..... surprise surprise

Well if you think it’s so funny, go to Wooten Basset next week when the repatriation of more 2 dead soldiers takes place. These people died fighting the representative of the guy you so admire and want to dress up as.

I’m sure you’d get a real big laugh out of the local.

The point of democracy is that you can always be part of that "bunch of people" if you choose to get up out of your chair and participate. Anyone can. If you don't bother, it doesn't mean we don't have democracy, it means you can't be bothered to take part and would rather complain on forums There's a you-shaped hole out there in democracy just waiting for you to fill it.

Humour depends on context. Your example would not be a good idea in the same way that John Cleese doing his Hitler impersonation during the November the 11th rememberance ceremony would not be a good idea.

You don't have to go quite that far to participate. Democracy is voting for the person you think is intelligent enough to make the right decisions for the good of the country. Otherwise there would be 66 million candidates on the voting slip.

I agree totally. With your references to infidels and paradise I assume you're referring to members of the Islamic religion. Strange how all the 7/7 bombers had Islamic names and Islamic faces, yet the cops aren't able to target these features when they decide who to stop and search for politically correct reasons. It's this inability to face facts that leads to the cops randomly digging around for other groups to target, just annoying the general populace and wasting everyone's time. Whilst the real terrorists just get on with it.

I would suggest the cops start hanging around mosques rather than hassling photographers. I imagine their detection rates would rise dramatically.

The day when white Christians start suicide bombing the Underground I'll change my mind.

Agreed, going off topic here, but you get told one thing and they then go and do something else and it keeps happening every time. They are about as trustworthy as a demented pit-bull and as capable as a goldfish. One lot screws up (just about everthing they touch) and the other lot line their pockets and we dont have to draw party lines for that to be a true statement.

The average Plod and PCSO just do as they are told, hopefully, within the law, direction needs to come from above.
The system even prosecutes on the basis of 'likely conviction' not on offence committed, hence the 'terrorists' done for fraud as the CPS probably thought they could convict on that and not a terrorist linked offence.

One party even went to the High Court to prove their manifesto wasn't legally enforcible and as such was pretty much meaningless. So I agree some people will promise all sorts with no intention of actually carrying it out. However I can't stand the view that says "they're all as bad as each other so I won't bother to vote." That way lies genuine dictatorship and extremism.

Where I live Hell would have to freeze over before the Conservatives lose their seat. Despite who I feel will win this seat and who I support I will vote and advise every one else also to vote, isnt that why we had WW2?

Just dont expect me to believe the democratic system works, by default it's the best system we have, albeit flawed.

When we were involved in Northern Ireland, I was wary of those with Irish accents as they were the ones trying to kill us - not all of them, in fact very few by percentage, but to be on the safe side...

Same as now...Moslem extremists are the enemy - not all Moslems, far from it, but I'm not seeing many white Christians amongst the ranks of the taleban...

It is not racist to recognise who the enemy is.

Yes but someone who has been brought up in this country, is of the muslim faith, yet is a British citizen should surely not be thought of as the enemy simply because they have the same skin colour as someone as a terrorist.
