weekly It is what it is, Sirching for 52/2016 - 52 - Celebrate

Superb!

I've subscribed to the thread but I can't make April the third. Maybe another time?

Works for me looks like a fascinating place, not sure i would enjoy getting there though

Not even remotely a shoehorn Chris!!
A belting image by any standards, but right on the theme too. Love it.

Amazing shot for living world. Great texture on the roof of the cave and just the right amount of movement in the water.

To pickle - made me smile I like it - fun shot for a hard topic.
Living world - Fantastic picture great details and quite tranquil

I should probably start with an apology for my indecisiveness but when I saw the theme, this hat that my son bought at a festival came to mind. The problem was how to shoot it. The first idea was to go for some sort of Mad-Max-esk distopian future look and I thought light trails might convey this but getting the right angle to get the trails disappearing into the distance with the hat in the foreground proved impossible at the available location

Then I thought about this incongruous gate to go with the incongruous hat

but after all that I thought the above was probably the best setting for it even though the hat is not so prominent. What do you think?

And here is a reshoot of Old. The idea was to try to convey a sense of growth by including some OOF shrubbery in the background however I am not sure there is enough shrubbery to really meet that objective.

Hi Chris, liking your first Spiky image, seems a better thought out image, balances nice with the rock and tree. The reshoot is very good too.

I prefer the one you chose for the main thread Chris. The hat and the bare branches of the tree against the sky seem to work well.
Was this taken in the evening as the light has a warm, golden look to it. (y)

Thanks Tim, we were lucky enough to get out in the sunshine yesterday evening although it was pretty cold.

The first one is better than the others in my eyes. Great prop and model, Very nicely shot and processed.

First spiky for me too Chris, from the hat to the bramble thats just about to attack your subject, it all works well (y)

Re-shoot, that's an interesting old fossil, I'm not sure that it really needs anything in the back ground, the textures say it all IMO

I'm another one for the first shot Chris ....the rock with the little tree, the beatiful sky, and the lovely model wearing the hat, they all work together perfectly.

I agree with Cobra about the fossil ...I think it works well as a stand alone object and to be honest I can't see much of the background.

Thanks Chris, I did think about cloning out that bramble but since the theme is spiky I thought it did no harm. You are probably right on the fossil and TBH I think this shot makes it look smaller than it is.

Thanks Susie, I really wasn't expecting the photo of Elinor on the rock to work out as well as it did, we got lucky with the sun set. The fossil reshoot was something I needed to get out of my system, unfortunately I'm not entirely sure the itch as been completely scratched.

I was trying to work that out as I was looking at it, but came the the conclusion that it was larger rather than smaller,
Also out of interest, do you know what it is? It *looks* like some kind of fan worm with a few molluscs also embedded.

That's a terrific image for Spikey - the one you chose to head your link. Lovely composition with the tree mimicking the spikiness of the headgear of the model - nice lighting too and detail in the sky. Wonderful.

Spiky - I too like the first one best infact my order of preference matches the order you have put them in.
Reshoot- I do like your reshoot whilst different to the original I am not sure that is is better or worse than the original just different

Hi CHris. Yes you chose the right image out of those for spiky. Really like the warmth in there plus the oddness of someone being there in that scene with that hat on just seems to kep you looking. Was it ambient light only ?

It's a coral, probably similar to a fan coral and this shot is looking a the side of it, it's about 18" at the widest and must weigh around 10kg. That was kind of why I was going for some branches in the background, to try to suggest what kind of thing it is.

Thanks Carl, we were lucky with the sky considering recent weather

Thanks Minx, I know exactly what you mean regarding the reshoot, my thoughts exactly

A nice selection for Spiky Chris - I like the one with the light trails, but number one does it for me, that rock, lone tree and the model is a nice combination and more pleasing to the eye with that nice sky in the background :)
Thanks Dean, I was liked the way the hat and tree went together

Thanks Gaz, yes that was just ambient, the sun was just about setting. the other two were lit with speed lights.

Spiky first one for me, great idea and well shot, the colours of the hat contrast nicely with the starkness of the tree.

Right place right time, well done.

Hi Chris - some great shots for Spiky! I love the first as the composition and balance between the tree and behatted (just made that one up!) subject are spot on! The light is great as well - could perhaps take a bump up in saturation or warmth (maybe a grad) to bring out that a bit more? Reshoot is ok, but not as strong as your spiky shot for me. Good job!

Hi, I like the first spiky too its pretty surreal extra points for that and I agree with the above comment about the reshoot

Thanks Paul, I didn't want to over cook it but I agree it could probably go up a notch or two. The reshoot was an idea that has been nagging at me and I am not entirely happy with it but I want to try to associate the fossil with living/growing things because it was a coral.

Thanks Alan, I was aiming for something surreal.

Love the first one for Spiky love the details and the colours. The low angle you've used makes it a really striking image

Your spiky shot is my favourite of all spikys so far! I think you managed to find the perfect spot for the hat! ;) That little bare tree on the rock totally complements and balances the model in the spiky hat and the sky background brings out the spikes very nicely.

Reshoot - It’s an interesting subject - looks like a weird shaped rock to me. (It’s a fossilised coral?) Nice light on it and dof. But I can’t really see the shrubbery in the background. A bit too oof to tell!

Spiky - the first is definitely best, really nice pic :)

Some great spiky images.

My fave being the main entry (#1) ... Outstanding composition, creativity, lighting and colour. (y)

shot of the week award? a contender certainly.
