I've just been emailed to say I need to provide my employer with a photocopy of my passport or birth certificate....
Do I have to comply?
Do I have to comply?
It has to be a 'full' copy too, a shortened one isn't acceptable! So they want my birth certificate instead....well a copy of it !
Mine has expired![]()

Check that:
- the documents aren’t expired (except UK passports, which can be expired)
Yeh, you could, but why would you? He would get the job instead!dara o'briain did a sketch where someone wanted his passport as proof who he was... but when they looked it had expired... yes but its still me! he excaimed...
a passport is still a form of photo id surely even if it is expired?
surely a birth certificate is flawed... i could take my brothers in and pretend to be him....

immigration have an uncanny knack of finding out for non-uk originating citizens. i know of several "busts" on eastern European people that have resulted in the discovery of forged documents....but would they ever know?

Well if your employer asked you for your birth certificate, and you took in your brothers............but would they ever know?

I think it might be noticed if either of my brothers turned up instead of little old me!![]()
Not everyone *has* a passport...
I'm trying to stay away from heather and heath!

Not Hayfever, I tend to fall down the holes in the heather and heath STORY.hayfevers a b****r - try eating honey from local bees![]()
are you a UK citizen?
Yes but most people have been born so thus should have a birth certificate which as mentioned is an alternative option
I knowits to prove you have the right to work in the UK.
I almost reported this post due to the authors blatant stupidity![]()
It can't be a legal requirement as you are not required to own a passport.
We were recently all given a form at work to give our passport numbers 'for identification purposes' Mine was returned with 'I don't have one' in place of a number. I have worked there for twenty five years - I'm sure they can identify me without it!
Steve.
If you don't have one I'd ask to see you birth cert and/or NI card instead.
I have no idea where my birth certificate is and I'm too old to have a National Insurance card.
Steve.
Large fines involved too so I'm told.I think its a legal requirement for an employer to take all reasonable steps to make sure their workforce are legal to work in the uk - passport photocopying is an arse covering way of demonstrating that they've done that. If you don't have one I'd ask to see you birth cert and/or NI card instead.
A friend of mine once accidentally employed an American who's visa had expired - that caused no end of hassle, which was still rumbling on nearly a year later
