It is a legal requirement now for your employer to keep a photocopy of passports

Never heard that one before. I wouldn't I don't even give my employers my mobile number.

If you are a new employee, I think is to do with illegal workers and trying to do away with them.

I stand to be corrected by other far more knowledgeable people.
 
Your employer has to complete certain documents re. your employment, and they have to prove they have taken the necessary step to ensure you are legally entitled to work in the UK, and can ask for you to provide said documents (and / or others)
He’s doing it wrong though, as he’s actually supposed to see the document, and then sign the copy to attest to the fact that the original document was seen.
They can actually ask the same thing of longer serving employees too, though many don’t bother.
Do check though that your employer complies with the Data Protection laws regarding the security of employee records.

It has to be a 'full' copy too, a shortened one isn't acceptable!

dara o'briain did a sketch where someone wanted his passport as proof who he was... but when they looked it had expired... yes but its still me! he excaimed...

a passport is still a form of photo id surely even if it is expired?


surely a birth certificate is flawed... i could take my brothers in and pretend to be him....

i think its more to cover the employers behind. so providing false documents would simply get the applicant in hot water when caught.
 
As someone who regularly hires people i can say defintely that we are required to see proof that they can legally work in the UK - I don't however know if this is an HR rule or the law. I can say however than anyone who refuses won't get hired (whether a curent employee would get fired for refusing i can't say - it doesnt come up because we all showed proof when we were hired)

It doesnt have to be a passport there are a range of other documents that can be used ( I think we require two if other forms are used) which include birth certificate, P45, P60, NI card and so forth

Yes but most people have been born so thus should have a birth certificate which as mentioned is an alternative option
 
Our company policy is that whatever we use as proof we take a copy of it. So it at least proves I have seen it. My staff ones are kept in a locked cabinet and do include a copy out of date passport. And yes all employers have to provide that information to the border agency (or whatever they are called this week)

Not Hayfever, I tend to fall down the holes in the heather and heath STORY.
We have a beekeeper in the local park (Heaton Park) the honey is fantastic!
 
It can't be a legal requirement as you are not required to own a passport.

We were recently all given a form at work to give our passport numbers 'for identification purposes' Mine was returned with 'I don't have one' in place of a number. I have worked there for twenty five years - I'm sure they can identify me without it!

I think its a legal requirement for an employer to take all reasonable steps to make sure their workforce are legal to work in the uk - passport photocopying is an arse covering way of demonstrating that they've done that. If you don't have one I'd ask to see you birth cert and/or NI card instead.

A friend of mine once accidentally employed an American who's visa had expired - that caused no end of hassle, which was still rumbling on nearly a year later

Well if your not able to prove you've the right to work in the UK then the employer is not going to employ you, I'm sure you'll be able to find something though if you try, rather than being so predictably pedantic

Large fines involved too so I'm told.
 
yep - although it looks a though my friend may have dodged that bullet , by promptly notifying immigration (or whatever they are called now) as soon as she found out
