Yes
I have an old desktop which no longer powers up. However, inside the tower is several hard drives from which I'd like to retrieve the data.

Is there any kind of way I could take the hard drives out and with some kind of device attach to to my current laptop to remove the data?

Any help would be appreciated. :thumbs:

You can also get external cases that you put the harddrive in and connect via USB. More expensive but they are portable and make great back up devices.

I have my two old IDE harddrives in two cases that I use to back up my photos with.

Yes. The solution I have given is probably the best for one-time backup; it's not the greatest if you want to use hard drives more often. Cases are better, as they protect the hdd in a way.

I was thinking of the external case but really only wanted a one time back up solution. The hard drives are pretty small and will probably be used as a paper weight after I've taken the data off it. :) Just ordered one off eBay. Will hopefully get it delivered this week.

I can see a probem. How are you going to power the drives?

The kit I ordered says it comes with the following;

This package includes the following:

* USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter
* Power Supply with UK lead
* SATA power lead
* SATA serial cable
* Driver CD
* Instruction Guide
