It has begun....and now it's ended....again **TP OFFICIAL WORLD CUP THREAD**

I take it that you mean the world cup....

 goodbye to any descent tv then (not that there was any in the first place) - spose one good thing is that when England play the shops & roads will be clearer .....

How could anyone not be utterly excited? Here's to cheering us all the way to penalties in the quarters!

No, say hello to decent tv for once you mean!!

I don't understand the attraction... A bunch of overpaid pseudo-celebrities running around a field kicking a bag of wind about!

Not for me thanks...

Erm, me! Not got the slightest interest in football, the thought of spending time watching 22 prima-donnas kicking a bag of wind whilst being egged on by neanderthal knuckle-draggers and their En-ger-land chanting is way, way down my list of things to.

Can't wait until it is all over. :p

I'm with Joe and Dean. Each to their own opinion and all that, but I for one love the world cup.

I realise it was a tongue in cheek comment but I certainly don't consider myself to be a 'neanderthal knuckle-dragger' either.

Ha ha ha an oldie but a goody!!!!!

We've decided to make this the World Cup thread otherwise the OOF forum will get get busy and very messy.

Please post all your World Cup stuff in here.

Thank you.

In the words of Nelson Mandela:

"The 2010 Fifa World Cup is more than just a game: it symbolises the power of football to bring people together from all over the world, regardless of language, the colour of one's skin, political or religious persuasion."

Even those that dislike football can't deny that... there is nothing else in the world that can achieve the same, on the same scale :)

excellent, and please lets not have it full of posts of people telling us you dont get footy or the world cup, thats not me telling you what you can and cant do, its me asking if you would be so kind as to let us footy fans have this as our place to discuss

:D

is that fair?

Don't worry, I'll be keeping well clear of this one. :)

See, right there, you just saved me typing out a mini rant by beating me to it.

I'm 100% with you on this.

:agree:

I love World Cups, just not when England are playing. Watching our team huff and puff to the quarters or semis only to be roundly schooled by a technically much better team and set of players gets boring after a while. I love watching eveyone else though!

What is football?

Great opening ceremony, means a lot of them. Im watching South Africa vs Mexico now and there lucky not to be losing, Mexico's disallowed goal was harsh but fair.

Can we have 2 threads, one for the footy fans who go and watch games each week and are interested in the world cup.

And one for the people who want to moan about the footy blah blah blah blah. :dummy:

Thanks.

It is an insight though into how many small minded twollies there are on TP, that are far too superior to support their national team, and the ethos behind the concept of "world football"

It's not a case of 'not supporting the national team' as you put it... I hope the poncy bunch of primadonnas win but that doesn't mean I want to hear about it every five flippin' minutes on national tv, radio and the internet! You wanna watch it, that's fine... That's what you've got Sky Sports and pubs for! ;)

It would be far more appealing if there was actually a UK squad rather than just an English one. I daresay we'd stand a better chance of winning and this whole 'Anyone-But-England' thing would die a sudden death too. :)

I have better things to do than waste 90 minutes of my life staring at the TV watching a symbol of blatant tribalism and the shame that'll no doubt come from a bunch of drunk yobbish supporters who'll end up making an arse of themselves in someone elses country.

<steps back ready to get a flaming>

So what are you doing in a football supporters thread, or do you just like moaning.

i was asking colin if we could talk about the world cup in the fantasy league thread?

incidentally won my first fiver of the tournement by guessing the 1-1 score line of south africa/mexico

I'm in the fantasy league and it would be a good place to talk about the world cup as it hopefully wont get swamped by anti football posts.

I had 1:1 for today too although no prizes in our work one till all the group games are over.

Doesn't say b****r all about being a supporters thread in the title! ;) And I'm just as entitled to my opinion as you are! It wasn't a 'moan', it was an observation!

To paraphrase a friend of mine, the only thing missing in English football is a 'Pampers League'!

I'll let you get back to your Heineken, pizza, Doritos and popcorn and leave you to your 'sport'.

so when the olympics is on and its all you hear about in the media is that ok?

and when wimbledon is on is that ok?

if no then is it that you hate media coverage of large sporting events no matter what they are or is it that you just don't like football?

If it is the latter then tough s*** really, its a sport with national interest and deserves all the coverage that other sporting events of its magnitude get. If t s the former then again, tough s***. Sporting events of a national interest deserve the coverage they get.

:-)

I can't stand politics but I dont going flaming in pro politics threads when the election was on

oh and if you try and tell me it's not of national interest because its only england in it, then firstly I'm talking about england - if you hear about it in wales then I guess you are watching and listening to shows broadcast in england as well. And secondly whether another country is in it or not it's still a worldwide event that is of massive interest to sports fans nationwide.

Not an observation unless a biased one. More your opinion. Which counts for little when it's peppered with narrow minded twaddle, and schoolgirl insults.

<ignores rest of post for its irrelevance>

Blimey Joe, you sound like my ex-wife! If jumping to conclusions was a sport, you'd be signed up in a flash! ;)

I quite like the Olympics... Lots of choice and I believe we field a UK team rather than just an English one.

Wimbledon... Never watch it. Mainly because I don't have any interest in tennis.

Football... Can't stand the game - especially the way it is now. Too much money and media coverage for what? I used to go and watch Reading play when I was a kid and used to enjoy the matches (and the atmosphere). I just can't quite understand people having the same passion for something that's on TV. If it's such a big deal to you (and toonamp), why aren't you in S. Africa?

Now Rubgy's a different ball-game (if you'll pardon the pun). Whilst there's still a definitive nationalist bent to that as well, at least we actually field a Lions squad made up of the best the UK has to offer! Why can't that be done with soccer? Does the thought of uniting the entire country behind one team bother people that much? As I said, it's too tribal and too commercialised.

'toonamp'... Not an observation unless a biased one. More your opinion. Which counts for little when it's peppered with narrow minded twaddle, and schoolgirl insults.

I'm not the one throwing insults... I'll leave that to you! It may well look biased to you but that's your opinion as a footie supporter. Being narrow-minded would more likely apply to you rather than me though... I actually suggested it'd be more interesting if there was a proper 'national' spirit, rather than a purely English one. To suggest otherwise shows your own shortcomings!

As for 'schoolgirl insults' (I guess that refers to the Heineken and pizza remark), take a wander away from the TV and have a look around the supermarkets... If what I said wasn't accurate, why are the likes of Tescos et al heavily promoting alcohol and snacks for the duration of the tournament?

damn you've finally discovered that I am her in disguise!

The point is, just because you dont like the game doesn't mean it shouldn't be in the media as much as it is, you have no issues with other sports being in the media so you have to lump it I'm afraid.

As for being in south africa, unfortunately I have a job where I only get 2 weeks of holiday, a 10 month old daughter and a pregnant wife. As much as I would love to be there, its not as important to me as my family and work.

It does get my goat though when people claim that unless you are actually at matches you cant be a real supporter. People like this should really get over themselves

As for fielding a national team, the english FA wanted to do this for the olympics in two years and guess what. Wales and Scotland said no, we dont want to be a part of it. Absolute shame as I'm sure the footballers themselves would have loved the chance to compete in the games. As it stands england are looking to go forward with a team because they want to actually field one rather than the selfish powers that be of said other nations.

I suppose there was little chance of getting a decent thread on the world cup, when even the mods refer to the supporters as knuckle draggers. Quite offensive to my wife and kids, let alone all the other intelligent law abiding peeps that follow the sport.

You carry on Simon, I'm sure you have many more insights to share.

Personally I'm backing out of all football threads, the smell is getting offensive. I'll leave it for you sneerers to wallow in
