It's not just the chicken either.
Why must these products be labelled as something they clearly are not?

Supermarket labels are a guide to what it tastes like, neddy, not what it is! :)

Ive never understood why a vegetarian would want to eat something that tastes like something they dont eat. I wonder if any real vegetarians actually buy the stuff. Its not like its a healthy alternative to real chicken either IMO. A nice piece of grilled chicken breast...pretty healthy to me.

The packaging is pretty specific there Jonny.....Clearly labelled as chicken.
I know it says "meat free", but it also says "chicken pieces",
Not chicken-like pieces etc.... Chicken.
Not "tastes like chicken"...Chicken. :p

Exactly.
Make it resemble a carrot....or a sprout; and don't even mention the meat is purports to resemble on, on the packaging.

The reason why firms make "imitation meat" dishes is simply in order to flog them to pseudo-vegetarians, people who just don't eat red meat, and so on. Speaking as a lapsed vegetarian myself, I can assure you that the only "fake meat" food of interest to your average vegetarian is facon i.e. fake bacon. But actually there's no need even for that, because as all vegetarians know, bacon is actually a vegetable

As to Quorn "chicken" pieces not being a healthy alternative to real chicken, that's a matter of opinion. At least with the fake product you don't get to eat the antibiotics with which all your normal supermarket chickens' food is laced ...

The one that has always annoyed me is vegetarian sausages, in this country I forget the percentage value but for a product to be a sausage it has to contain a minimum mount of meat, otherwise it has to be called something other than a sausage e.g. A banger...so how on earth can a product with zero meat be a sausage  :cuckoo:

It's along the same vein as Lesbi.... Actually no lets not go there :naughty:

My favourite drink is Lesbian. (Ploumari Ouzo.)

Never knowingly eaten Quorn, neither has Mrs (Veggie) Nod. She doesn't really understand why a veggie would want to eat a meat analogue (and doesn't regard bacon as a vegetable...)

The older packaging this came in before I discontinued it said "Chicken Style Pieces". I've dropped it because it takes nearly 2 years to sell an outer!

Now i am butcher by trade and you make a very good point, something (since being out of the buisness some years ) i never thought off, when i was a butcher it had to be minimum 50% for beef and 60 % for pork if i remember correctlty....

Forgive me....I'm trying to make sense of that...

Its deception. Remember the whole outcry when there was a little horsemeat found in some beef patties in some major supermarket. Now I have no issue eating horse, but when paying for beef, I'd rather get beef.

I'd well hacked off if I came home buying what I thought was chicken and it was the quorn nonsense. Why do vegetarians feel the need to thrust their horrible food on to us via deception like this?

More hippy nonsense. Human's are carnivores (fact, tho some may dispute is, it is the case). Eat meat, get on with it. Eat veggies fine but don't bleat about it to others. The end!!:)

We're omnivores, we can and should eat meat as well as other things. Our jaws move side to side and up and down. A balanced diet should have meat, fish and veg and fruit, carbs (rice, pasta, bread).
Edit

Yeh, that's kinda what I meant. We're designed to eat meat (amongst other things):)

Forgive me....I'm trying to make sense of that...

It was referring to the fact that the pieces of stuff were shaped like chunks of chicken, as opposed to other lines they did, mince for example which looked like minced beef. THat sold slightly better, managed to get rid of the last of it earlier this year! The mince never to my knowledge said 'Mince style' though!

Nonsense. You wouldn't live long on raw meat and there are no ovens in nature.

Also, our intestines are not suited to raw meat eating.

Or, if it was the "outer" bit that confuzzled you, Ruth, an outer is the big cardboard box (or plastic wrapper) that holds several individual packets together.

I will admit to liking soya in a couple of its many forms - soy sauce and edamame. No use for me as topuke or fake meat.

BTW, Brash was right (as far as Picts go!) - they're carnivores up there, not omnivores! ;)

Pass me a vodka bottle, I actually agree with brash on something..... :exit:Now we just need to teach him yet another big word...Omnivore. :D

Omnivore means an animal that bites at anything, Brash should understand that

That's why we invented fire? Cavemen did it all these years ago so they could keep warm and eat cooked meat, if we weren't designed to eat meat we would have evolved to be no1 on the food chain using our brain power. Human kind needs a balanced diet. A part of that balanced diet includes meat and fish. Trust me, you can have some of that meat and fish RAW i.e. raw fish never did the Japanese any harm and beef carpachio (thinly cut raw beef served on a bed of rocket and parmesan cheese)....delicious and healthy.

My point was that we cannot be natural meat eaters as cooked meat is not natural. This is something which has evolved.

And I think fire was discovered rather than invented!

Discovered/invented ok I get it, fair point.

Maybe our gut before we discovered fire and could cook was a lot stronger and could take it. The very action our jaw can go up and down and we have incisor teeth indicate we are destined to eat more than veg. Had we not been natural meat eats we'd only need a jaw that goes side to side to grind food and wouldn't need incisor teeth.

Plus, purely aside, meat is awesome. And that Quorn stuff, that definitely isn't natural.

Human teeth are not designed for tearing flesh as in the lion, wolf or dog, but rather compare closely with other fruit-eating animals. Human teeth correspond almost identically to the chimpanzees and other frugivores. The complete absence of spaces between human teeth characterizes us as the archetype frugivore. The "canine" teeth of humans are short, stout, and slightly triangular. They are less pronounced and developed than the orangutan's, who rarely kills and eats raw flesh in its natural environment. Human canines in no way resemble the long, round, slender canines of the true carnivore.

So carnivores/omnivores don't eat cooked meat??

Yes but only because the cooking breaks down the structure to make it digestible. In order to be classed as a natural meat eater, we would have to be capable of living on a raw meat diet as raw meat is natural, cooked meat is not.

Interesting read actually. Stuff there I geniunely did NOT know.

But I am still going to eat meat, its a great source of protein and iron, and whilst not strictly natural, its so awesome I ain't giving up on.

I thought it was interesting too. If you haven't guessed already, I don't eat meat - but I have no interest in what others choose to eat and do not preach what they should be doing.

Oh, that's good then. I'm gonna happily remain carnivorous/omnivorous and I may occasionally cook something!!

Chimpanzees will happily actively hunt, catch and rip apart other smaller primates, with Colobus monkeys being a favourite tasty treat.

They don't cook em tho:D

Haven't you seen Jungle Book? They are still trying to find out the secrets of fire!!

That's ok. There are moments when you come across as reasoned and thoughtful....I know they're an illusion too :p ;)
