Hi All

I have just yesterday updated to W10 from W7

I have found that if as usual I click on a .doc Word 2007 it no longer opens but if I have Word in use and 'find' the .doc and click on it it will open AOK. So just why will they not open by clicking on the file to, as usual, start Word to view it?

TIA for any help and feedback :)

PS .xls Excel files open just fine by comparsion

right click and "open with", does that work? sounds like a lost file association.

The option to use Word is already highlighted and that does not work....................goes off to check by reasserting Word to that association....back in mo to report ;)

Nope that did not work :(

is Word still in the same location as it was before?

Not been moved from "program files x86" to "program files" or similar?

Same as it was before and as mentioned I even tried to re-associate it with the file type. As mentioned above .xls files open OK, this with the files being in the same root path as the .doc files and of course Excel being in the same location as the Word program.

PS even trying to open a template file in the MS Office folder does not work!

Just for the record:-

The error dialogue box that pops:-

It gives the path of the file and the text below it says
"There was a problem while sending the command to the program"

maybe try a repair install of office

Unfortunately the "repair" of Office did not solve the problem :(

This is MS Office 2007 SBE version, as I do not wish to have to recreate my Outlook accounts, I cannot recall if there is a way to just uninstall Word and re-install that component??? Off to Google that one!

OK, looks like I solved it. Much reading of Googled links and ref to DDE check boxes..........tried amending the "compatibility" setting in the Winword properties.

It was set to Win XP, I changed it to Win7 and now clicking on the .doc file opens it as normal in Word ~ phew! :D

So far so good ;)

MS Office 2007 runs perfectly on my Win10 laptop. Opening from the file explorer (or whatever it's currently called) is my default method as usually I'm pulling a file to work on off my desktop, used as a 'server'. However.............. the only upgrade the laptop has had is from Win8.1 to 10 as soon as it came out of the box, so all the software was loaded afterwards when the machine 'knew' it was Win10.

I've had this a couple times on different machines with office 2007, not even just on Windows 10, but also on Windows 7. Weirdly they've always been a different fix, and the fix in this thread was different again to any I've used in the past

Hmm maybe 2007 isn't quite 100% W10 compatible then..

As you say not 100% compatible but all the input says it will be OK ;)

Never has there been a technology closer to cooking...............even with the same recipe the end result can come out different

Yes, my Googling revealed(?) a range of 'solutions' but FWIW the fix I found has another twist.

When I checked the properties of Excel and Powerpoint they were by default set to "compatibility mode Windows 8" so I did the same for Word after posting 'my cure'.

It seems that with an upgrade install of W10 where it finds the likes of MS Office products it sets a compatibility default of the closest to W10 i.e. W8........but in my case it missed a beat on Word and defaulted to XP, ah the joys of Windows ;)
