Am I correct in thinking that Nikon have a feature of their D range called Auto ISO?

Why canon can't come up with this is beyond me :annoyed:

I attended my nephew's 1st birthday party yesterday and managed to get the first 50 odd shots on 800 ISO :(

The 5D handles 800 better than the 20d did, so all wasn't quite lost.

I'm going to resort to putting a post it note over the view finder now with

[s4]check the flinking ISO[/s4]

Yep, auto-ISO is on Nikons. Allows you to set a minimum shutter speed. If the shutter would otherwise drop below, the ISO gets lifted to hold that minimum speed.

It would be better if it allow it to auto-adjust the min shutter depending upon the focal length (esp. for zooms), but generally it's a good feature.

I've always read Canons handle high ISOs better than Nikons, so maybe not as much of a need on Canon?

I'd settle for ISO in the viewfinder!

You could always use full auto - that will do the ISO for you ;)

Yes the D200 has auto ISO & in-viewfinder ISO.

Mmmmm.

The D200 does not have an ATM feature, however. I'd settle for a cashback option, but I doubt they'll listen to users (my) needs :<

Yup, annoying for me too on my 30D. I'm slowly learning to drop it back to 200 after using it now. I still keep forgetting though.

Aye, a view finder indication would have been good.

I'm going to petition Canon for auto ISO

I was snapping away at my nephew who's decided that crawling is too slow now, so I made the school boy error of not paying 100% attention to the camera.

Wouldn't have gone down too well if i'd have let him face plant on the patio while fiddling with the settings

I think it's only a firmware issue isnt it (Auto ISO)

Damn those Nikon people..... thinking of nasty useful things like that...

Um can't really say I'm that bothered with ISO now. Its more a case of how much grain do I want in my shots. ISO 100 - 1600 are all nice on the 30D for me. I'd imagine better on a 5D.

An ISO readout on the viewfinder/LCD would be very useful. I end up shooting in 800/1600 quite often because I forget to change it after shooting in low light. Its incredibly frustrating at times.

The Iso don't matter In the daytime much but at night I keep to 200.

It's because they extract my brain cells.

If I remember rightly OldGit posted a tip about this. Don't know how to put a link in.

I think the D70 has that feature but I haven't worked out how to set it yet :help: But it doesn't have ISO in the viewfinder - only in the top plate LCD and then only when you press the ISO button.

*goes off to read manual*

All the nikons do have this feature. The d200 even lets you limit the selectable range of the auto bit so you can stop it going too high. Can't say I ever use it myself, my longer lenses all have VR and generally I don't need it for wide angle stuff as it all tends to be static!

My D40 has to Auto ISO, but tbh, I never use it for some reason! I have noticed though that manually the ISO rating doubles from 200 - 400 - 800 etc like any other camera but with the Auto ISO i have noticed settings such as ISO 250 and so on.

You can adjust the Nikon settings for full stops, half-stops and third-stops. I think the auto-ISO does this on it's own for more flexibility, so you get third stop ISO settings and shutter speeds.

I actually use this a lot on mine. I have several banks set up, one of which is auto-ISO shooting, so it's a couple of button presses to switch from static ISO to auto-ISO. The D200 also has it in the viewfinder, and very easy to change the ISO from the function button top-left. Hold the button, spin the function wheel and ISO reset.

No wonder cameras look like F1 car steering wheels...!

I've worked out how to set Auto Iso, but I was under the impression that you could set a maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed, and it would give you the best combination? On my camera it just seems to set the ISO completely automatically.

Are you using it on aperture priority? If you use it on shutter priority it obviously can't raise/lower the shutter speed, so aperture priority is best. Then as you stop the lens down (or the light drops and aperture remains constant) it will raise the ISO so to hold the minimum shutter speed.

Essentially when you choose the aperture, it sets the highest shutter speed with your minimum ISO. If it can't get a good exposure it will drop the shutter speed until it can, and if it hits the minimum shutter speed you've selected, it then starts ramping the ISO until chosen aperture + minimum shutter speed + auto-selected ISO = good exposure.

Of course all this happens in an instant :)

Ahhh...Got it now. Just took some snaps out the window and it did exactly as you said. I nearly always use aperture priority btw :)

Just one more thing - is it possible to set a maximum ISO?

Thanks :)

It is on the d200 but not on the d70.

Just be careful of iso1600 ;)

I used to find my d70 would use it as a default lol!

So, are you saying that @ 800 you overexposed on a bright day yesterday ?

exposure wasn't that much of a problem tbh, but i'd have liked less noise especially on the indoor shots.

It wasn't that bright either......rather a grey day tbh :(
