Hi, all me and the family are off on a bit of a road trip in a few weeks and one of the places we're off is the Isle Of Skye.

Jackie mentioned the dinosaur footprints on the north east coast near Staffin.

Anybody recommend anything else?

I don't know if its the road leading to or the road looking over applecross, on the mainland, I've seen stunning photos from there!

Glen Coe is on-route too, about 2 hours from Glasgow before Fort William, something I embarrassingly only found a few weeks ago!

The west coast of Scotland is just view after view.

One other thing, take insect repellant!

Andy,

Through Portree heading for Staffin you will pass the Old man of Storr (if going up allow at least four hours).
Staffin has the beach with the river which has small waterfalls.
On the road to Uig next is the Quirang which forms part of the trotternish ridge, there is a carpark on the road up where you will get the iconic view back out to the east (best time is first light)
Past Uig there is a village that you might want to stop at called "Sheader", on towards Balnaknock you will find the Fairy glen with waterfalls and pools.

I could write for hours regarding places to go, but it would take you months to visit them all.

My favourite places....

Dunvegan Castle, Talisker bay, Sligachan, Neist point, Port na Cullaidh (Elgol) for the classic view towards the Cullins

So far we've selected: Loch Ness (:D) Fort William, Fairy Glen, Staffin, Crarae Garden, and a place called Sheader (which is my surname).

Isle of Skye is superb!

Last night was the clearest sky is have ever seen and the night before was the most colourful sunset I have ever seen :)
 
Elgol and the short boat trip to Loch Coruisk....(google Loch Coruisk and see what you think of the images!)

Or walk to Loch Coruisk from Sligachan if you feel up to it :) make a long day of it get dawn/dusk shots etc

If you are into birds (i'm not particularly) then i hear Raasay is good for that. I've been to Raasay but wasnt looking for birds so cant really remember:)

Agree about road near Applecross (the place itself is Ok but a little overrated imo)

I'm Scottish, so a little bit biased, but it is THE most beautiful place in the Uk :)

Oh and climb up old man of storr etc, well worth it. Too many places :)
 
There are so many places in Skye to photograph , but on the drive up you always have eilean donan castle as well.
 
The road over to Applecross is Bealach na Ba (The pass of the cattle) and provides stunning views all round from the very top. Not that many years ago it was the only mainland access to Applecross and so, in winter, supplies had to be obtained by boat. The pass itself is narrow with passing places (typical of the Highlands) so drive with care. If time allows, it is worth the trip.
 
True, really take your time on that road if you are going that way.
You could go onto Skye from the south, and come back round and down via that road for example for a change - its well worth it, just take care and dont look down :) last time i went up that road i couldnt see 6 feet infront with the fog, was ****ting it for whoever couldnt see me as they were coming down and round some of the bends! No room and a big drop.
 
Well, back in Leeds :'(

Isle of Skye...was fanbloodytastic and we only saw a small part.

I'm setting up a holiday savings account on Monday because we're going back in 5 years for a 2 weeks holiday :clap:

On one of the nights we saw the most colourful sunset I've every seen and 2 days later the sky was totally devoid of clouds and we could see thousands of stars and the Milky Way from one side of the sky to the other. It was phenomenal...I set my camera up to photograph star trails but forgot to focus....too many sherbets :bonk: :bonk:

Really pleased that you had such a good time. One of the many great things about the Highlands is the lack of light pollution. On cloudless nights (and there are a few!) I often just stand outside and stare up at the stars. It puts life into perspective, that's for sure. :)

Now that's a fact!

Memory of the holiday has already started to face....getting old, I suspect!

Few photographs here, clicky linky, in the 'Photos for pleasure' section because none were planned.

Savings account opened for a return 2 week trip to IOS planned in 5 years...:D
