I'm gonna apologise in advance for this but I must have my rant!

I'm getting REALLY p****d of with blokes referring to their wives as 'the wife', on this and other forums, indeed anywhere.

What is this 'the wife' then? A ****ing kitchen appliance? Kettle? Dishwasher? Toaster? A sex 'object' that just happens to wash your undies?
Or just some 'thing' you live with that won't let you spend as much as you'd like on toys or take her photograph?
Do you buy 'it' some flowers/chocolates/perfume/undies/whatever occasionally? If so it's rather strange behaviour on your part - why don't you buy some for the microwave and the lawn mower then?
I think you should all take 'the wife' out for a romantic meal and apologise to it. Or get used to being referred to as 'the ex'......

Rant completed, deep breath taken, glass of wine poured....

Thanks all.

the ( before a vowel; before a consonant)

a. Used before singular or plural nouns and noun phrases that denote particular, specified persons or things: the baby; the dress I wore.

I think wife fits in this category quite well !

Do you have any objections to me referring to my mother in law as "the monster in law" ? :D

Not married myself and refer to my partner as "my partner" but don't really have a problem with people saying "the wife". I think most people would only use it when writing though as ive never had anyone introduced to me in person as "this is the wife"

well it all depends in what context you need to use that pharse really, it would be pointless me saying, " well donna took a dislike to that" because you dont know who donna is!, but if i said " my/the wife took a dislike to that" then you would know who i was talking about.
perhaps we need a thread on members and their wife/partners

I agree with Nick.

Surely you (should) only have one wife at a time therefore it would be "my wife", "the wife" should usually refer to someone else's wife as in "the wife of my friend".

Would someone who refers to their wife as the, also refer to the mother, the father, the brother, the sister when they are talking about their own relations?

Have you stopped taking those tablets?

Chill out man. It's Common English usage and, in the correct context, it matters not.

The present Mrs Bloo agrees with me!

Good rant! enjoyed that.

I don't like it myself, its a demeaning type of reference overall isn't it. ... I do however think most use it a little 'tongue in cheek' and the users are probably in real life very decent overall. I've loads of mates who often refer to their wives as 'her indoors' or some other demeaning phrase, its a game for most.... believe me the girls returning phrases are far more constructive, and usually brutally close to the truth. ...Ouch.

If I referred to my wife as Emma, none of you would have the faintest clue who I was talking about.

In this context, "my wife", or even "the wife" or "the missus" is fine. And I'm certainly not offended if on the forums she uses that she refers to me as "her / the husband" - as long as its not 'hubby' as I can't stand that phrase.

personally i use the term the wife, in jest mostly but the wife knows i do and doesnt mind.

Do you know why women get married in white?

All domestic appliances come in white.........

:coat:

.........

.................

All of the above......

.............but one is not daft enough to say it within her hearing range!

Now then, what's the wife got to do with you?

Is there something going on?

Typing "my Wife" just seems a bit twee, "the Wife" implies a much more robust/equal relationship.

IMO etc ;)

I wish. I'm only getting half of those features out of mine. Is there some sort of unlock code I need to enter?

 This thread is funny. I'm a wife and can tell you it bothers me not one single jot to be called 'the wife'! In fact I will go as far as to say I like it :D It took me long enough to become the wife, any reference to it still makes me tingle :D

I guess "the wife" is better than "her indoors" or what about "the other half?" :D

Yes.

W-A-L-L-E-T

Make sure she knows the combination too.

i will speak to the wife and see what it thinks about this thread

That reminds me.....

why do women have smaller feet than men?

So they can get nearer the cooker :naughty: :exit:

I looked in on a forum about scrapbooking and the shorthand used was DH, DD etc., for "dear husband", "dear daughter" etc. Suggested abbreviations blokes could use: MW, TW, HI, TOC, TOB, TSB, MSW, OAWRPP and not forgetting DW. Simple, eh?

And of course us guys know ( well hope for) what W.I.F.E. stands for
( thats me in deep do do :coat:)

Do you dislike the usage of terms like, Black bag and Manhole cover too?? Just curious..

Is the Mad in front of Marco for a reason?

Maybe the 'the' is there to denote her legendary status (in the husbands life anyway) like in 'The Rolling Stones' for example.

ps the above is meant in jest, it's been a long day, no need to rant at me, honest.

On a forum, I may use / the wife or my wife / or she who must be obeyed.

But to her face, I just say yes boss :D:D:D

Chill out, it's T'internet not real life

well i asked the wife her views about this thread but i couldnt hear the reply she was chained to the sink and the washing machine was drowning her out maybe i will ask her when i unlock her and let her out for a wee

'The other half' is always mentioning how much time/money 'the wife' spends with/on Nikons.....which I quite like, because as yet he hasn't opted for walking me back down the aisle so I can only assume he is referring to someone else :D

Well if you wanna be pedantic if you're not married you don't have a mother in law....
And no, I don't care how you refer to her, this whole thread is just for a laugh....

I just think if you said 'my wife' it seems as if you care about her, to me 'the wife' objectivises her.
But hey, it's up to you......;)

It is common english usage - does that make it right?
I'm not saying I'm Right mind, just have my opinion......

He He He... Deservedly so mostly! and fair play to the girls. Glad you like it btw, it's all for a laugh, at me, at 'the' wives, at 'the' monster, er, mother in law, whatever....

Got any new ones?.....

Twee? Not in touch with our feminine side are we? Typing 'my wife' challenging the sexual orientation in some way?

surely when you use the term "my" it implies you own that "thing"

so do you own your wife? (www.thia-brides.com?)

I use "the missus" although technically its still incorrect because i'm not married!

Gotta be honest, there are far worse things in life and much more worthy of a rant. I'm not looking to argue, rather putting my opinion across. I refer to my lovely Emma as 'the wife' just as she refers to me as 'her driver/heater/cash point/mechanic/handy man' and any other number of names. End of the day it's not like I'm referring to her as 'skiprat/tramp/ho/slapper' or anything like that.

And Gaz, I think you meant www.thai-brides.com, not thia brides :D

You sound like the kind of bloke that would know of a website like that.
If I owned my wife I would refer to her as 'the' wife, my wife merely indicates that I'm not talking about yours or anyone else's.

It's meant to be a laugh mate. Can you manage that?

Posting when drunk (implied) is never a good idea, really................is it? And if it was meant as "a bit of a laugh" where are the smileys to announce this? Sarcasm never comes across well in text
