Hello,

as I am prioritising to buy a lens (cannot save money on glass) over a flash and money is always the question, I started looking for cheap alternative, so I came across this Yongnuo YN460-II flash, bear in mind my knowledge about flash is very limited (I never had or used a detached flash before) I thought that on paper this flash look very good. However I dont know if trust such a cheap price (can get it on ebay for about £40).
so here's the question, I am an amateur (started about 1year ago) and I like portraits, is it worth going for this flash or is it merely a waste of money? if so is my alternative only a sd600 or more? and mainly is this flash fully compatible with D3000? Fire it up guys and thank you:D

I've got one and in all honesty I'm not impressed. It seems VERY temperamental, appears to exhaust batteries like they are going out of fashion, I literally have to replace the AA batteries after 10 shots or so.

Avoid is my advcie but others might have a different idea.

Seems to be a day of opposing opinions today ;)

I have complete the opposite, never had a problem.

This Flash though is Manual ONLY!!

So if you are looking at putting it on top of your camera hotshoe and using TTL then I think the flash you need to be looking at if you don't want to buy an SB600 is the Yongnuo YN467 or the Nissin Di622 Mk II.

these models you suggested can be used TTL even with a d3000? thanks for you advice guys

excellent thanks, sorry but i have one last question, i just found it on ebay, however it is advertised as a canon fit, I am looking for any sign of nikon compatibility

Can't comment on this model, but I just bought some YN560s for strobist work - and they are really good. Robust, VERY easy to use (easier than my 580s)!

nothing but praise for my 460II's. i have got two. they are great bits of kit for the price.
bought for strobist purposes. 560 has a little more functionality.

I agree. They're great value for money. I have 5 yongnuo flashguns. :)

same here, got a couple and they never miss a beat.

excellent VFM

just a silly question, do I have to get the transmitter and receiver as well, is that right? I am going for the yn467 as it can be used ttl with d3000

If it's for indoor use off camera, you can use the pop up flash on your camera to trigger it when it's set to optical slave mode.... you could also use wireless triggers if you wish.

I bought one 2 weeks ago along with a radio trigger (total cost £50 ish) from ebay for my Nikon D5000.

Thumbs up all round. My reasoning was it was cheep and allowed me to play with off camera flash. the difference in pictures using it (on and off camera) was amazing.

I have a 467 for my D50, batteries seem to be okay, managed a good few hundred and since I last charged the batteries. TTL exposure is fine but I have 2 gripes

1: the power is a bit feeble and I am usually at 1/4 power or more.
2: the wide angle thing broke off far too easily. Slipped with the flash on the stand bracket so it swung down and hit the stop, the shock sent the wide angle thingy to the floor. It's now just jammed in the slot to hold the bounce card in place.

For the cost I can't really complain and the results are perfectly acceptable but I'd get a used SB-600 if I could run to one, mainly for the extra power (around 10 more GN).

I used it during a shoot outside. The optical slave mode works really well, it didn't miss a single shot! The power on the other hand was "okay", it works fine up to 10-15 meters to illuminate a person with an open background, I could do with a bit more (shooting sports). I thought the battery life was short but not unbearable, in total around 60 shots were made with that flash (and others) at full power and the batteries had some juice left(the most basic alkaline duracell ones). If you use rechargeable batteries, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

i dont really use optical slave - just get a set of RF602's - far more reliable. very cheap and they havent misfired for me yet. both my flashes and wireless triggers get daily use as im doing a 365 project; really helping me learn strobist techniques.

No problems with my Yongnuo 460II. Very good value for money flashguns.
