Is UEFA bluffing or very serious?

I've read on the BBC webstie, it seems that UEFA had threatened to disqualify England and Russia from Euro 2016 if fans don't stop rioting and behave themselves.

Um, excuse me, I'm very out of date with football as I lost interest in football during my teens, but do UEFA actually have any powers to do that?

How very serious is UEFA thinking about kicking England out? Have they given any deadlines like "Be good by this date or we kick England out!" considering it would take some time for word to get around to the fans?

What happens if fans don't believe UEFA would do it or aren't listening?

If England gets kicked out of the Euro, how would it affect the Group B tables? Would Wales and Slovakia just be placed into the Round of 16 without needing to be at top of the tables?

And I'm rather worried about one thing: If England gets kicked out, would the fans accept it was their fault, maybe hopefully they behave during the next World Cup or just get angry at UEFA and do more rioting?
 
It makes sense. The nasty fans end up going home and then the others behave better. The warning is out and they'd better listen.

I would also hope the lot get tracked down and bare minimum handed stinging penalties to remember.

But how do it make sense? If UEFA disqualify England, then the England football team would have to pack their bags and go home, with the nasty fans who ended up going home. Since the England team had been kicked out and had to go home, the "others" who better behave may as well pack their bags and go home since their favourite team is not there.

Football is just a game and entertainment. It is not a right or necessity. If you can't behave watching it then the game stops. Simple. By the way "others" really refer to fans of other teams as well as those who remain; they would behave in a more civilised way.

Exactly! Makes perfect sense to me. Throughout life the small minority spoils it for the rest of us. However they are a disgrace and this combined with locking them up for a long time may be the only thing that makes sense.
 
Lots of media stating the Russian fans seem to be very organised, and have also colluded with locals. I'm not saying the England fans are saints but it does seem to be that they were set upon rather than starting trouble.
 
It's UEFA's tournament - I don\t know for sure, but I'd be surprised if they didn't retain the right to disinvite anyone they like.

The tournament is about an entertainment spectacle and an advertising platform for big sponsors (those guys who have their names behind players when being intereviewed after a match). Marauding thugs battling is 180 degress from that, and they will want that to stop.

They can f*** right off. The England fans were set upon, and while some England fans may not be innocent what will banning do? Those taking part in fights will not give a damn. UEFA have organised it badly along with the French police and we are now being made scapegoats.
 
Which may very well be true (or not), but if it is. Haven't they learned from when they were in school where that annoying boy kept on kicking underneath the table and the moment you finally respond the teacher is watching and you end up getting detention.

Life is not fair, want to avoid it? Just don't rise to the occasion.
 
The pictures I see of England fans, pint in one hand and throwing a bottle with the other don't look very innocent. I'm ready to believe that the majority just wanted to go and see the football but they are the ones who need to sort this by pointing out the trouble makers.
Scotland international fans had this reputation twenty/thirty years ago and the real footbal fans themselves fixed it by turning in the ones who were just there to cause trouble.
 
Fairly pointless to eject them from the tournament I'd have thought.
Those intent on causing trouble won't leave.
If anything, just start deporting Brits and Russians (from these areas) en masse.
 
I should imagine the various sponsors and merchandisers wouldn't be too happy should the ban actually does come to fruition.

I worked for our National Football organisation, in a junior role, for 2 major tournaments, and in one of those there was what was a perceived to be a very real threat of England being thrown out. They'd already decided to move the location for ticket pick-ups if we got through for security reasons, but in the end we got knocked out anyway so it became a moot point. I'd say it's unlikely but possible.

In terms of actual violence committed, there are far worse nations out there due to the excellent police work in the UK \ banning orders etc, which are not prevalent in certain other countries.

In the stadium yes but the trouble in Marseille for the previous days, the english were most certainly implicated.

I have to wonder how we would react here if say hundreds of turkish fans were to behave in the same way on our streets. Shouting racist stuff, getting blind drunk and being, at the very best, belligerent to the locals. Oh wait....
 
I say chuck the teams out if the fans can't behave.
The only way things like this will stop is firm firm action.

But wasn't English fans already rioting for a couple of days before the England v Russia match, and it was on the day of the match that they were set upon?
 
Supporters blaming the police, brilliant, that's like Stevie Wonder blaming specsavers ;)

Football fans are idiots, but it's a game for the lower classes, add stupidity with alcohol and the result is there for all to see.

Currently I am in Belgium and the idiot English fans here are an embarrassment.

I would prefer England lose on penalties against Germany than getting chucked out.

Better for England players to try their best, if they lose, they leave the Euro Cup as professional players talking about where did it go wrong, and try to improve on the mistakes.

Than for England players to feel let down by the fans who were meant to support them, to cheer them on.

Their history of losing on penalties to German can't last forever, sooner or later, one day England will finally get to break that losing steak (is that correct spelling?).

Please don't try saying pigs may fly, a betting shop said that when a Leicester City FC fan made a bet that they would win the Premier League! :-)
 
People need to stop referring the hooligans as football fans.
They're not.

I assumed that UEFA would deal with football clubs, players, management, etc. Government would deal with the fans (like taking away their passport, travel ban, etc.,)

you serious ....i played the game both pro and semi level , and then after injury and other issues i became a football fan
My Mother was a English teacher and my Dad had is own buisness i guess that puts me in the lower class of society then(y)

No they don't go to games, they travel to pubs near the ground and cause hassle.

I am sure many season ticket is not purchased with a months wage, merely, paid for by a payday loan company or similar.

Why is it that every tournament English fans go abroad, there is trouble? Each time a small pocket of society pipe up with oooh it's not all of us (fairly obvious) yet the majority do cause trouble.

Thick people and alcohol is a bad mix.

England manager, Roy Hodgson's appeal to English fans.


In other words, "Pipe down for crying out loud".

I hope they don't spoil the match on Thursday (or the days leading up to it). My brother will be there supporting Wales and really doesn't need the hassle.
