Yes
Serious question. I'd never heard a 'tog or 'togging of before I arrived and have never heard it elsewhere since arriving. I'm not the only one who has been confused. I've seen a few more people clueless about it. Is it just this website that uses the word?

I seem to remember the word being mentioned on Radio 2 on Wogans morning show :D

On a similar note, I'd never heard the word 'bokeh' either before I came back to the forum...

Tog

Its probably a lazy forum abbrieviation thats evolved. There are alot or abbreviations and TLA's that I have seen on here, some I still don't undertand!

Maybe a post of common TLA's and abreviations and their meanings is required.

E.g

TLA = Three Letter Abreiviation!

People look at me blankly when I say Ive been out togging. Someone once thought I had said "dogging"

:agree: :D :D

..oops was agreeing with the quilt comment but two posts came in before Id posted lol

I had the veryt same reaction the other day! Try fending that one off in the pub!

Matt, I can assure you that Tog is used on most photography forums & has been an accepted abreviation for many years..

Hi

Been a pro photographer for thirty years and never heard it until here but its not bad. Been called many things including Snapper. One night, down the pub someone got it wrong and shouted across the bar to me calling me shagger. This coincided with my wife walking through the door. She had come to collect me and was not amused lol

i use shooting but have known to use the word tog infornt of th wife with a curious response :)

When saying i am shooting some women this weekend has caused a bit of concern at work until i explained i do photography.

Has abreviation been accepted? I'd suggest its hardly worth it ....:)

Personally I find tog and togging rather lazy and demeaning ... but that's just me.

Shooting suggests all the wrong things too. Snapper .... ugh!

I seem to remember that one photo related forum I am on informally banned the word as decided we were "photographers" a word everyone recognises.

I must admit I would never call myself a togger (horrible word). I AM a photographer :D

Mind you, I tell the announcers on the television off every time they call Coronation Street "Corrie" as well. It also slipped out whilst we were at a friend's last week and one of the children said they were off to record "Corrie" and I automatically responded that it was Coronation Street - their Mum agreed :D

tog [tog]
vti (3rd person present singular togs, present participle togging, past togged, past participle togged)
dress up: to dress up, or dress somebody up, usually in smart clothing (informal)

n (plural togs)
measure of thermal insulation: a measure of the thermal insulation properties of fabrics, quilts, and clothes. It is equal to ten times the temperature difference in Celsius between the two surfaces when the flow of heat across the material is one watt per square metre.

npl or togs (informal)
1. clothes: clothes of any kind
2. Australia, New Zealand Ireland swimming costume: clothes worn for swimming

[Late 18th century. Shortening of obsolete slang togeman , from obsolete French togue ‘cloak’, from Latin toga

Strange world the internet. I have no objections to typing 'tog', 'togging' or any other variation but would never say it out loud. Bit like cussing, never say it but happily type '*&%.

Sounds like a great idea. I hate the word. This thread shows how odd it can sound.

Exactly. It took me a long time to find the confidence to call myself a photographer, to put myself in the same genre as great amazing people. I'm not going to take something away from that by saying that I tog... eugh.

The trouble with any abbreviation is that the persons using them assume that everyone else knows what the abbreviation means. I would suggest that perhaps that is rarely the case, with the result being that the point or comment being raised is not always understood or appreciated, thus making the whole exercise a waste of time and effort.

Pete, that thread you started was hilarious,

Personally, I never say it aloud either, I have been know to type it, but thats because I am a lazy typist more than anything.

Ill make a concerted effort not to any more though, as it does sound rubbish!

I believe the Radio2 TOG stands for Tired Old Git and refers to the state of most of Wogan's listeners :-)

I dont call myself a togger, but I do say I am going out togging :)

Terry's Old Geezers is the radio 2 type of TOG.

As far as the photographic type of tog goes, it's not a word I have ever used, but then again I call it Coronation Street and I wince when people say ManU instead of Manchester United!! :D

It is problematic. I really want a good evening/night shot of the Humber Bridge. The car park and foreshore are notorious for 'that kind of thing'. Imagine the trouble I could get in to trying to tell the police (or any other intersted parties) that I'm there to participate in the act of togging.

ive never seen it in this context except here

i thought it was clothes..:bonk:

Is there a difference between a professional and amateur togger?

No, seriously :D

Togging the dogging. All the rage now with kids. I wouldn't say that you tog the dog though...

In my experience trying to explain anything to a policeman/woman requires the patience of a saint and the use of words containing two or less syllables.....

we use it all the time on deviant art and on Columbia camera club forms.

As those here from Wirral or Liverpool know tog is very much like togs. The latter being slang locally for your clothes.

Didn't Chris (Cobra) go out and do a bit of that a little while ago?

I don't mind the word Tog, or togging. But I do admit it's laziness mostly.

Strangely, I don't like to use the word ... pics  I do use it occasionally, but I am conscious of my dislike for it when I do so . I don't know exactly why.

I've never heard it other than here and i really dislike it.
It just doesn't sound like an abreviation for photography or photographer to me

Being of an age and disposition where the term 'grumpy old man' seems an ever increasingly appropriate description of how I view the world, I thought I was alone in disliking the term 'Tog'. Mention of 'Corrie' and 'ManU' has already been made, to which I would add 'Macca' (McCartney) and I am sure I/We can think of others too.

Anthony.

I don't like it either, and here is the only place I've seen it. I see photog quite a lot, which is a bit better...
