Hi all,

I've been told I'm going to be treated to a new camera body by the mrs, but she wasn't sure what to go for, so has told me to look into what I want

I've had a look around and was going to go for the Nikon 5100 (I've got a D60 so want to stick to Nikon) but I've seen it doesn't have the internal focusing motor, some people on here have complained about the menu also, and with a 70-300mm lens, it feels too front heavy.

So I've decided on probably the D7000. Have I made the right call there?
I don't want to go too expensive/top level, but that seems like a nice upgrade, and the I can just focus on adding better lenses to it as and when I need to.

Thanks.

I went the same route and I'm loving the D7000.

The increased AF points, higher ISO ratings, dual card slots etc are all well worth the upgrade.

Glad to hear you say that!! My thinking is that I'll get that and it'll do me for years, whilst I upgrade to better cards, lenses, etc.:clap:

Its a very good camera that should, in theory, last a good few years. The upgrades nowadays are all pretty minor, and unless you find a specialist niche that the D7000 can't handle, then I think you've made a good choice

Yeah, I can't see me ever having the need to go FF and the D7000 was the best upgrade balance on price/features for me. The body feels so much nicer than the D60. Just much more enjoyable to use. The limitations around the D60's lack of cable release connection, 3 point AF and poor IQ at high ISO was starting to annoy me.

For once I feel like I've made a good call in the photography field

Thanks for the input and confirming my decision! It's appreciated!

My wife bought me a D7000 and I'm delighted with it. Lucky us eh? :D

Just be very careful, bought a D7000 in March 2013, less than 900 shots I got the dreaded "ERR" message!! The mirror was stuck in the up position. tried all the usual stuff with no luck. Took it back to the retailer who also tried all they knew (not a lot). Off it goes back to Nikon for between 2 to 4 weeks!

looking on the net this is not a rare situation, quite a few people have had this happen on more than one occasion. I have a Samsung GX-20 with 45,000 on the clock no problems, I also have a Nikon D40 with 65,000 again no issues. (The D40 is much sharper even with a much reduced sensor resolution, this brings me to the second point; the D7000 has a back focus problem on the kit lens and even on the 35mm f1.8 prime. Deeply, deeply frustrated.
:bang:

Hi Mark
I have the D7000 and I'm very happy with it :)
Eric (above) has mentioned about 'back focusing'... a valid point, however, as the D7000 has a 'fine tuning' function which will recognise up to 5 different lenses, it won't be a problem.
Enjoy your new toy, and come along to lymington camera club if you can, there's a few D7000 owners there that'll be happy to help out with any issues.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I've, erm, ordered my D7000..... get it tomorrow! Fingers crossed I don't get the ERR message :(

I'm a bit of a newbie, what is a back focus problem?

I can't wait to pick up the new toy, hope the error doesn't happen to me! I've had the D60 for years, took it all over Oz and it was fine, so i'm hoping I don't get the error.
We'll see.

Glad you like the camera. I pick up mine tomorrow evening, and I can't wait to charge it.

Did you charge it straight away just until the battery was full? Or give it a massive charge overnight or something?

Bit bummed to hear about the error messages above, but hope my camera is defect free!

Don't worry about the odd problem that some folks have. Considering the amount of D7000's sold it compared to the ones that have this fault the percentage is minuscule.

Just enjoy your new camera, don't worry about faults or anything, it will be fine!

I'm absolutely buzzing about it, can't wait to pick it up and charge it, then I'm getting out with it ASAP!!!:bonk::bonk::bonk:

I used up the charge that was already in the battery then just charged it up again. I know with older batteries we had to do charge cycles and conditioning and all that but I reckon with modern batteries it's not an issue. Just my own experience, enjoy!
