I am wanting to view my RAW files in windows, but, at the moment, all I get is an icon and the .CR2 extension, is it possible to get an addon that makes windows show you the image like it does when viewing a jpeg in an explorer window ?

Thanks 4wd, but, I tried both the x86 and 64 bit codec packs, no joy, still got an icon of a camera and nothing else, I am using Windows 7 and my camera is a Canon EOS 1100D.

Any suggestions guys ?

Is there a reason why you want to view in Windows?

Canon's own DPP or Zoom Browser will allow you to view the files without hogging too much hard drive if that's what you're worried about:thumbs:

Just so I don't have to open any third party programs and can sift through my pictures from an explorer window.
Hard drive space isn't an issue, just trying to make things easier.

Have to say Zoom Browser can be a bit of a PITA. In fairness I tended to only use DPP if I was going to be deleting with my Windows laptop before importing into Lightroom.

Since changing to a Mac I generally just import direct onto a stand-alone hard drive through Aperture and delete from there if I need to:thumbs:

What about Faststone Image Viewer ? I know you said no 3rd party programs, but Faststone adds a shell extension so you can just right click and browse with...

ZB I got with my new camera I find is a pain to use, it spends more time not responding than it does actually working.

Have you tried uploading the photos to your PC via a card reader?

You should then see them OK with the RAW codec.

They ARE stored on my PC, not on the SD Card, but, it's not showing any thumbs of pictures, just the camera icon.

Tried the codec pack myself, rebooted and found all it did was change the CR2 icon to opens with Windows gallery or something. One codec pack now uninstalled.

Strange, I have mines set to show large icons with the MS codec and it shows fine.

Double click on an icon and it opens OK with Windows live gallery too:thinking:

I too have large icons as standard, but when I double clicked the Windows live gallery icon it said it had to make a jpeg copy first, not really a raw viewer in that respect.

FWIW I still can't view videos as thumbnails since I upped to Win 7, all my AVI's just show as the VLC cone no matter what I try.

Sorry, I don't know what to suggest next.

I see all the thumbnails clearly, no request for a jpeg copy and definitely views RAW.

The only thing it doesn't do is rotate the photo.
