Near where we live we have a waterfall that is in full flow at the minute which i have taken a shot of recently, but a friend has asked if i could take a shot of her with the waterfall in shot, my question is could i get her in the shot whilst making the water have the milky (longish shutter speed) effect and if so how..? i do have off camera flash if thats any use? never tried this kind of shot with a person in it... i intitally thought it could be done with camera on tripod and taking 2 shot 1 for the water and 1 for her and merging in photoshop? any pointers would be appreciated.

Carl.

Ok might be getting the total wrong end of the stick here but this sounds similar to when I had my daughter writing her name with a sparkler and getting her in focus too.

Ok it was dark and easier for long exposure so a filter of some sort will be needed then have the camera set to a second curtain flash, you get the long exposure needed for the water fall to go allmilky looking then the flash goes off and gets the freind sharp and in focus.

I could be totally wrong here but it worked with the sparkler and my daughter

Better way would to take to shots using a tripod, one with a slow shutter speed without the model to obtain the milky flow then one with the model at a high shutter speed to get a nice sharp crisp picture then blend in P&P

"er, lesson to self" READ THE WHOLE POST !!!

You don't need that long a shutter speed to get the water milky if it's flowing fast enough. Try some shots without your friend as a test to see how long you need, it might be as little as 1/4-1/3 second, which shouldn't be a problem for someone to hold still.

Photoshop doesn't have to be the first choice option..

Thanks for the input everybody, haven't got ND filters so hopefully if i have enough time and daylight ive got a couple of options to go at.
