Is this overkill for a weeks holiday!

Going to france for a week tomorrow, just packed the essentials, wife thinks I mad but I don't often get the chance to get out and about with the camera. She said I could take as much as I wanted as long as it would fit in the car, so I went and bought the biggest roofbox I could find :D

Taking -

D700 (for the FF lovelyness)
D300 (for the 1.5 crop)
24-70
70-200
28-300 Tamron VC (for the reach on the D300)
50mm Sigma f/1.4
SB900
tripod
light stand
ezyfold softbox (same as ezybox) for some nice al fresco family shots
ND filter kit (just got) can't wait to have a play with these

In fact the only thing I'm not taking is my battery grip and studio gear :thinking: :lol::lol::lol:

I did check with Aaduki this morning and I'm covered for damage and theft in Europe:)
 
As long as you are insured, why the heck not, as sods law you will want to take a photo with something you haven't taken and that's the whole point of taking the car on holiday pack it with the essentials ;)
 
Yeah just a little!!

You are going on holiday after all. I would be inclined to take the FF body with the 24-70 and 70-200 lenses. This should cover most of what you need to do.
 
if it fits in the car - may as well take it. Mine tried to tell me one camera and one lens for the week. I nodded and carried on as before

This year I'm taking a 6mp P&S that cost me £100 several years ago - for me it's all about family time

That said, I am (secretly - okay it's not that much of a secret now is it :)) planning a short European city trip, just me, myself and the camera :)

Way over the top imo. But then again it depends what you like to shoot. When I went to the US back in May I only really used my 17-55 f2.8 and on 2 ocassions my SB800. With that many lenses, I would say make sure you have enough sensor/lens cleaning gear! ;)

You sound like my misses! I'm only going to have an hour a day at most to play with the camera gear while the baby is having her morning sleep, lots of places near where we're staying where I can take the older two exploring ;) while swmbo is putting her feet up for an hour. Plus there's the two days at Disney, I'll just be taking our little point and shoot for that I think :)

It is OTT I agree, but if there's room in the car I don't see why not!

99% of the shots I take are portraits so I'm looking to take as wider variety of pics as I can, wildlife, lanscape, architecture etc etc...
 
I'm the type of wife that would say TAKE IT ALL you might need it LOL, but then again I'm the 'tog in this house not my hubby. Every time I go somewhere with chosen lenses I find I've chosen wrong and wish I'd bought the ... whatever... lens aswell. I probably wouldn't take the softbox and lightstand though. .. that might be pushing it a bit far :lol:
 
Last year I flew easyjet to spain with the following:

D3
D300
14-24 f2.8
28-70 F2.8
70-200 F2.8
Sigma 300 F2.8
2*sb800
grip for the d300
Laptop
Canon HV20
Tripod

Everything except the tripod went hand luggage :D:D

My Mrs tried picking it up and went absolutely mental at me.

Said - "no wonder you've got a bad back" :D:D:D
 
i think you should leave the light stand at home because its not like your going to carry that around all day.

i would also get a cheap monopod instead of tripod unless your doing landscapes.

all the equipment would fit in say a stealth reporter, and there not that big so you might as well do it.

Personally I don't think it's too OTT. I think I would leave one of the bodies, the lightstand and the softbox behind though.

Top Man, I very nearly forgot my monopod!!!!! Added to the pile :thumbs:

I've got a Tamrac Pro 12 which is pretty big, but a rucksack is a lot easier to carry around...

The lightstand is to hold the Ezyfold, specifically want to have a practice with it before deciding if I'm going to use it at a christening the weekend after we get back. Not going to carry it around, just use it in the grounds of where we are staying...
 
Phil, remember the key word, holiday. ;)

I'd trim the kit back and enjoy some quality time with the family. :)
 
Not a mention of storage, or the laptop for the evening viewing/PP :D
 
I'd only take the D700, 24-70, 70-200, and the 50/1.4 .. everything else is redundant on such a short one week holiday. Even at night, without a flash, the D700 is amazing with the 24-70 and is just super sexy with the 50/1.4

As been said, it's a holiday ... use that time to enjoy the holiday and not your kit
 
If it fits in the car, taking it is the easy bit, what you do with the half ton of crap you aren't using is another thing.
Seriously, if you don't plan on babysitting a big bag of money all holiday, I'd cut it to a body and 2 or 3 lenses, something you can realistically carry most of the time.
 
Take as much as you can as you know you will want the item that you left at home.

I'm planning on 2 bodies and 4 lenses when i go to NZ in a couple of months. Obviously all the extras like filters, batteries, CF cards, grips, tripods to take too. But i'll squeeze all the big stuff in to hand luggage and all the little bits in to checked bag. As for carrying it around with you......... well if you get a cracker of a shot then that is all forgotton.
 
MAYBE leave the D300 at home - if you need the extra reach, switch the D700 to Dx. OK, it'll only be 5.1MP but that should be enough for decent A4 prints and almost acceptable A3. Then again, a body doesn't take too much space, so take it!
 
not at all, that lot seems normal to me :/

everything on my camera bag list goes with me every trip out anywhere - and definately on holiday! :)

That's a helluva lot of kit, what are you planning on taking pictures of??

I've just had a week away and took my D700, 24-70mm, 24mm, SB600 and my old Fuji compact. And I didn't even use the SB-600 in the end, the on camera flash was more than adequate for fill in flash.
 
OK, car is loaded - ezyfold softbox and stand back in the cupboard.

Now got all my gear packed into mini trekker and small rezo shoulderbag. There's a space for the D300 so may as well take it!

EDIT: **** it, ezyfold and stand out of the cupboard and into the roofbox :D

EDIT2: swmbo just gone mental that I'm taking a softbox on holiday, poor thing is staying in blighty:'(
 
I'd take d700 24-70 70-200 50 and maybe the sb (with triggers)

also maybe tripod and filters,

but I'd ditch second body and the 28-300 and probs lightstand +softbox
