Hi all, as you can see I'm fairly new around this neck of the woods. I got my dslr (canon 500d) a year last October, slow but surly I have been learning the basics and now getting to the part manual and manual settings abit more.

I really like night photography and wanting to get in to that, that's my aim anyway.

However over the last month or so I have been beginning to find my self during my everyday life to be thinking photography a lot. I mean I'm walking about and thinking that would be a good photo, that could be a good photo from that angle over there. It goes on.... I don't have my camera during these times though, but it's as though my creative side is slow but surly coming out.

I think I may be becoming an addict, is this normal? :help::bonk::cuckoo::thumbs: hahaha

Thanks for reading!

Hello Matthew, welcome to the forum!

this is completely normally, and you'll end up berating yourself for not having the right camera/lens whatever with you too.

the worst thing what will happen to you as a photographer is this insatiable itch to buy very lovely lenses and it just won't go away until you buy it, and there will be some begger on this forum that keeps posting lovely pictures taken with said lens and you'll just have to give in eventually and buy it :-)

If you're passionate about it, I'm not surprised :}

My college lecturer once told me that by the end of my course I'd be waking up in the morning & looking at the light rather than the weather, she believed that you reach a point where you begin to see & think from a photographic viewpoint & that's the foundations to realising vision. Undoubtedly, last summer I finished college & realised I was talking about light to friends who thought I was insane. One of my favourite photographers calls it his 'relationship' with light which I always thought was interesting.

Photography can be so much more than taking a photograph I think. Beware of the "lenslust" that'll soon follow! Best wishes.

Sweetly put Ashly, my wife used to say "why are you turning around all the time and looking all over the place"
She is used to me now and just walks on .

My boyfriend scoffs when I pack three cameras for a little day trip but he always appreciates the photographs after. I recently gave him my last DLSR before I upgraded {a Canon 400D} after he showed an interest & he's started getting into taking photographs, teaching himself a couple of basic manual exposures ~ think it just goes to demonstrate how intriguing taking photographs can be :}

I find that i am always doing that and i havent even got my dslr yet.
Saying that i am usually attached to my toy camera (Ixus is200)

Haha thanks for the responses, I feel more 'normal' now :) the lens lust started right afterI got my dslr, I now have the 18-55is it came with, the 55-250is and the 50mm 1.8 and on the hunt for a sigma 10-20mm :(

I have already read that my 'sickness' of lenslust will never end... Better get used to it! :D

It doesn"t go away , just turned 60 got my 1st film camera Pentax ME Super in 1980 and bought a 7D afore xmas and got a 70-200 f4L off the classified recently.

I'm afraid you have photographicitis, sadly theres no cure except a wife threatening to leave, and even that doesen't work some times.
You will find a slow degeneration of your bank balance, and a predilction to "collect" bit's of photographic gear, often without a reasonable use.
Medication in the form of whisky may help relieve the symptoms for short periods, but tends to lead to other complications like blured shots and liver problems.

On the plus side your among friends here!

Hahaha "photographicitis" ~ perfect diagnoses!

It's when you start dreaming about it, then you may need to worry lol .

No of course not, I think about photos and cameras all day.
I will go and get my camera out of it's bag, I will look at it all over again, even though I have seen it many times before. I will handle the lenses delicately, just savouring the moment.

You seem a pretty normal guy to me ;)

Haha I have also found that I will pick up the camera, take the battery out, put it back in then open the SD card slot, do nothing then close it. Look about the camera and put it down all without even switching it on :bonk:

I type this as sitting here camera bag one side of me, camera the other side of me and considering where I'm going to go this evening to take my photo of the day for my 366

As has been said your condition is totally normal, unfortunately it is terminal, there is no know cure or treatment, you can only treat the condition with regular use of your camera

Welcome to TP

Matt

So in short, a pretty normal bunch of people you will find on here then

You guys are cracking me up!

You're gonna fit right in here :)

Yer that's normal, but you have your muse right now, keeping it up is the trick.
You may find that in six months time what you enjoyed shooting at the beginning you have absolutely no interest in the future, i was mad about landscapes in the beginning but now i gravitate towards still life and controlled lighting, studio stuff.
I still shoot scapes now and then but only when the light and conditions are right, i used to send myself on all sorts of adventures but now i have been to these places i know when to go to get best from them.
Anyhow, back to the muses! You will no doubt get through plenty of genres and find one you love, i used to dj and started out on funky house, then Latin house, hard house, hard dance, trance, hard trance, techno, breakbeats, drum and bass, and dubstep! In that order lol and have got the stacks and stacks of vinyl to prove it! But i lost interest once everyone moved onto cdjs, i couldn't afford the good equipment and now i just play at house partys now and then.
That doesn't mean you can't take a good photo on old equipment! In fact most of my prime lenses are old olympus film lenses nailed to the front end with an adapter.
So mix it up and keep at it. But most importantly keep looking for your muse, whatever or whoever it may be!

My name is Rick and I get the shakes,I can only stop them when holding a 150-500. Yes I admit I am using the HEAVY stuff :help:

I used to sometimes see a person or place in terms of an image I wanted to capture - iand I didn't have a camera - it was was what made me want to buy a camera. I got a compact and within weeks was getting hooked by photography. After two months I joined a camera club and borrowed a DSLR til I could get one for Christmas (just over a year ago).

So I suppose the idea of capturing an image was latent within me - and as a teenager I tried drawing and painting, so maybe there is an artistic streak somewhere that is coming out...? But I never realised I would get so interested in photography.

My ears can pick out any camera or photography related conversation amongst friends, I can spot a camera bag on a stranger at a distance if out and about, I think of light differently, I look at photographs in magazines and notice catchlights and think about where the light is coming from (I also do this sometimes when watching TV).

There is so much to learn - currently I'm getting to grips with the basics of studio work and different types of lighting. But I know I could get equally fascinated with landscapes, or street photography... or many of the other area... (except perhaps wildlife photography as I don't think I could sit quietly for long enough!)

Camera club is great as it means I can hang out with like minded people who don't think I'm mad... I suspect some of my friends do though! Fortunately my b/f is very understanding and carries my camera bag for me.

I was quite the same. I did a BTEC First in Art during my GCSE's & in my last year I was introduced to {basic} darkroom work. I just fell in love with it. I'd always had an interest in Photography but it was that moment that I felt passionate. I went on to do a National Diploma in Photography at Kingston College of Art & Design ~ I'd never have found a better course. I haven't looked back to drawing!

Apart from the bit about the boyfriend, I could have written this. I think I've been bitten by the camera bug, and aint no antibiotics ever going to cure me
It does seem to free the frustrated artist in me
