Is this normal for a battery ?

I found two batteries that I'd mislaid for three years I thought were lost !!! ( Nikon ENEL4a) I put them both on the charger and they fully charged with no problems , works perfectly. I didn't have much hope for them so I just wondered if this is fairly normal or am I just lucky ?
 
My D70 battery was in the camera with out being charged for 6 years,charged ok and works ok.
 
I thought that the majority batteries if left uncharged can have several problems like reversing polarity, chemical changes that prevent charging, leakage, capacity drop etc.

Probably only since they improved them :D cant have things lasting can we;)
