Would this mac be OK for editing? I don't do masse sof it or paid work, so just for general use...

It's a late 2009 with not a very fast processor but there's a fair amount of RAM.

It should work but it won't be that quick.

If it's a bargain I'd say it's ok.

I wouldn't pay more that £250 for it though
 
That model was launched in 2009, so its already a 10 year old computer. It can't run the current operating system without hacks, so whilst it would probably run the current version of lightroom, versions in the near future may not be supported.
 
So would it not be able to run CC? Is there a reason for that

You'd have to ask Adobe for a definitive answer but I'd imagine it's that the new CC software relies on more modern architecture and hardware than the old iMac has.

Not worth their while trying to make it work.
 
I think it would run Adobe CC at the moment, how well is another matter, but as Adobe develop the software and new updates come out monthly, it may stop working, or you end up with a reduced feature set. It can run up to 16gb of memory, and if fitted with an SSD instead of a conventional hard drive performance may be acceptable.
 
You would need to be very very patient. I have a similar age Mac here with core 2 duo, maxed ram, SSD and it really struggled with LR 5.7, let alone a more recent version. Brush work is practically impossible, and even basic editing is a case of drag and wait for it to respond - it owes me nothing, so it's my travel computer.

If it was £100 maybe, but I think you'd regret it even then.

What sort of spec would be minimum do you think, i5?
 
Quad core i5 (more recent generation the better) 8GB RAM (16 better) SSD.
 
Better start saving then, I may get a pc instead

I use a 2012 i5. It has a bit of RAM (24 I think but RAM is pretty cheap and easily replaced so don't base purchase decision on that alone) and it does have a retrofitted SSD. It runs LR Classic CC generally quite well. The only thing I would say is that 2 years ago, everything seemed to fly along, nothing seemed to slow it down. Now, with a few OS and Adobe updates under the belt and moving from 24mp to 36mp camera, it all seems a bit sluggish at times. I'd love to get a new one but by golly, the £££'s!
 
I had a early 2009 Macbook Pro that ran out of legs for LR/PS about 2 years ago and bought a new one. Given the current processing requirements from cameras and the LR rewrites that Adobe has undertaken recently, I couldn't recommend a Mac that old for the usage you are suggesting. Looking at MacTracker, if you could afford a 2012-13 onwards then you are into Core i5 & i7 processors and 16Gb RAM (careful of the Mid 2014 21in iMac that only accepts up 8Gb RAM) and replaceable drives (even the 2017 version)

For fear of going slightly off topic, slightly (sorry) could you recommend a good website showing how I could so this with a 2010 Mac Pro that I haven’t used for a while due to the lack of updates allowed now?
