Hi everyone,
Been looking into studio lighting for a while (couple of weeks), and came across this kit from ebay, but as I'm not sure what I should be looking for in a studio setup I thought I'd ask your opinions on here first.

Cheers

Andy

That is basically the same as the setup I started with.

If you can manage it though I would look at something that takes Bowens fit light modifiers such as Lencarta's smartflash. The Lencarta stuff is far better in reality. They do a kit for £304.95 with one umbrella and one softbox get this and pay the difference to change the softbox to an octobox ie. 120cm version would cost £10 LESS making the total £294.95 and the 150cm version would cost £20 more so £324.95.

cheers mate.
so say if I bought this, I'd eventually save money as all I'd have to do is buy the soft box, etc rather than change the whole kit

I agree with Darren, the Lencarta stuff is well worth the extra money

Personally I would go for the kit I pointed to and change the softbox to the 120cm octobox. This would be £294.95 but the octo softboxes are about £70 on their own. Brollies can be bought for as little as a fiver but to be honest I MUCH prefer softboxes (I know this is for you not me but I can only advise on what I would do). The setup at £294.95 would allow you to light the person using the softbox and light the background either with the brolly or reflector.

The lencarta setup also includes a 5 in 1 reflector kit.

If you CAN afford it go for the 150cm octobox at £324.95 and pay the extra £7 to upgrade the 5 in 1 reflector from the 80cm version to the 110cm version.

So £331.95 in total :)

Octo softboxes give you round catch lights in peoples eyes which looks SO much better than square ones.

honestly, with the bit of reading I have done about lighting, I have to say I do prefer the softbox version, as they diffuse the light better (if I read it correctly)

EDIT: would I have to contact Lencarta to change a couple of bits from the standard spec?

Ring the number and it will probably be answered by Garry Edwards :), anyway you just need to tell him the standard kit that you want and then the changes. You cannot change just anything but you can change like for like parts such as a light modifier for another light modifier etc.

I actually use the ElitePro lights as my main lights but I bought the setup above on wednesday this week changing one of the lights to a 600w Safari ring light and the softbox to one of the collapsible ones. The larger 5 in 1 is definitely worth getting :) So I have one Smart Flash light which is now specifically for the HiLite , the quality is VERY good

cheers guys.... order will go in over the next cpl of months now I know the vague budget
