Well after 5 pages I think most agree the forum is not over moderated (me included). I still think that occasionally a mod will go flying into a post that in my view doesn't need moderating but this is only my opinion.
I do not look at the OOF but I might now after seeing some of the post here.
Anyway back to editing my footy piccies (yes I do sometimes take photos).

Ha, less of the old age. I've always been soft, I'm just very f****n' adept at not showing it.:)

You can get pills for that too, defo see a Doctor ;)

I think that is were a lot of people post replies, with intention of causing trouble with the thread started, and the other contributors. Wish people would stop replying with silly remarks, with the sole intention of causing grief!

Another forum I look at has a section for all politics, opinions etc. You have to apply for permission to read and post, there is no process bar that. Anyone member can join in to participate. It's a case of wanting to or not,if not, fine. It can descend into a bit of argy bargy from time to time but on the whole, if robust talk threatens you then best you stay away, like any pub really.
Like it or not our lives are inextricably linked with politics and the ********** in power so IMO it's human nature to discuss such and rant occasionally. Foolish statements get picked up on and explained/shot down in flames as and when. No point losing sleep over it.

Not a bad idea, keeps the rest of oof amusing/lighthearted etc

Once again a thread starts as argumentative contentious back biting and descends into friendly convivial pleasantness! (y)
How dare you say such a thing. What a plonker. Honestly.

I suppose that's my fault too:(, most things are ;):p

I took it that this was referring to Out of Focus, a section I have collapsed and don't look at; but it happens in this section as well. It can be guaranteed to happen if anyone strays onto an (apparently) off-limit topic that involves art or "art photography". On that basis, I supppose I could argue that the forum is under moderated (though I appreciate why). :(

As I've said many times

As you can see from the comments, we can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time. ;)
(Apologies to Abe Lincoln)

Perhaps you need a points system (like the classified access one) triggered by the ratio of sensible/intended to provoke posts. We could make life complicated, couldn't we? :D.

Footnote: where's the smiley for "I love view cameras"?

We do have various tools at our disposal, one is to ban people from just a given thread, however sometimes I feel its not used enough ;)
But that's "our" fault for being too liberal at times, and giving "just one more chance" ;)

Can you ban me from OOF?
I try not to go in there but I see the threads under "New posts" so get drawn in.
I've set ignore on the worst of the posters in there so that helps but wouldn't mind if I could miss all of it!

I believe that the admin can do that, ( selective forum ban) but I also think that you would still be able to read, but not post.

Will power Mick will power :D

More won't power I think.

I don't use the new posts feature as there are relatively few sections that interest me; if I had no access to anything other than Talk Photograpy, Film and Conventional I wouldn't be losing much; add in Beginners and three of the photo sections and I'd be about covered. Hence, I just watch sections to get notifications of new threads and look out for new replies.

:D

Yep that's probably the safest bet, watch the forums and threads that you are interested in (y)
Which is more or less what I do, I don't think I ventured into OOF till last year, and some days I wish it'd stayed that way.

But its like watching a car crash isn't it?
You don't want to look but can't help your self
( generic use of the word you )

Much the same way I used to use the forum myself until I was dragooned into the Green Team... F&C, the POTY competition Area and a couple of the Photo Sharing Areas were pretty much the extent of my wanderings to be honest. And, I must say, the longer I'm on the staff, the more I yearn for those simpler times and being able to just ignore OOF, Feathered Area and the Classifieds sections (to name but three areas of oxygen thievery...)

Sounds like a good idea :)

Its not easy being "green" :D

The facility exists to ignore certain posters. That we we never see any threads they start and their posts in other threads. Surely it must be possible to add an "Ignore Forum" button at the top of each section.

Birds, People, Nudes, OOF. All would come under consideration.

(And don't call me Shirley)

Its a good point, Shirley, I'm nor sure how easy it would be to do that, or even if it was viable,
but I'll add your suggestion in the staff room, for admin to look at.

Done :)

It would be nice to be able to swipe away threads or just ignore them once they'd gone off the rails so you're not dragged in after you've said your piece or decided that'll you'll end up banned if you keep arguing.

Why would you need to automate that and add more work and unnecessary functionality.
Dead easy, ignore the threads, or even of you read the title, start of it why not just move on and ignore. Why make it complicated?

You can, just don't read or reply to the thread. No one forces you under duress to read or reply to contentious threads. Once things descend into the ever decreasing circle, I just ignore it.

You've always been able to do that. Just ignore them, or stop contributing, if you don't like the direction they're going in. You can't be dragged in against your will.

Clearly, but sometimes it's symbolic and sometimes it just puts temptation out of reach.

There's about a dozen keyboard warriors that feel they have to get involved in every thread posted in out of focus, they know the answer to every question asked and are always right no matter what the subject.

Their opinion is the only one that matters and everyone else is wrong apart from their mates who will join in a take over the whole thread until it's locked.

But you know what, this place wouldn't be the same without them and I for one would miss them if they were to leave.
