Simple answer, yes! Might have been a preset exposure length, 5 secs or something, but in essence you have it right Kel ;)

We tried a couple last week with some kids playing with them on the south bank, not got round to processing them yet though :bonk:
 
It's quite effective isn't it. Might have to get one of the kids to have a play this weekend
 
Looks like second curtain flash was used as well...

i think also indicated as 'slow' flash.. i could get up off my lazy a$$ and check my D80 but i am sure thats what its called..
basically when you take a photograph the shuter opens by the curtains silding over each other, then the second curtain slides over the opening to close the shutter, second curtain flash means the flash triggers as the second curtain moves, so you get the effect of 'freezing' motion at the end of the exposure..
so in the image linked you get the blur of the light sabre swirling around over say a 2 second exposure, the flash triggers just before the end of the exposure freezing the child - without that he would likely have also been a blur

i did something similar with a sparkler and my 6 yr old - i now know second curtain flash may have meant i got a nice sharp image of her inside the sparkler circle rather than the blur i got :D
