Is this a scam? Yes it was! lol

thread title has been amended , wow thats a surprise :bang: :bang: :bang:

I had a question.. It got answered, thanks to TP help and their answers to emails. I put it in the title, why is that wrong? I haven't removed/changed any of the posts - this way it lets people know the outcome without reading through it all. Have I done something wrong?

Gumtree = Scam

Always. Don't bother expending time or energy thinking about it.

Simples!

Woah woah woah... just because some scams are orchestrated through Gumtree (as they are through other similar services, hell, I'm sure there's been problems at TP before with sales) doesn't mean that full stop to avoid Gumtree. I've bought and sold through it before, all face-to-face transactions (yup, the poor sods had to see mine ) and happy seller and buyer on both sides for all of them.

it must be just me , but the way you started and ran the thread made out that you didnt know what was going on and played the innocent ( potential ) victim , if it was your real mobile number i would still not have posted it publicly , of course it could be me , tired after a week of late shifts

:S

I took my mobile number out as another TP'er said it would be good practice in one of the reply posts. I took out the name and details of the seller as that's the right thing to do. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

I posted on the forum to see what other people thought, a fresh pair of eyes and all that. General consensus was scam - so I walked away...Not too sure how the thread title edit changes any of that..

I got back from a night shift this morning - so I reckon I'm defo off my game today! Trying to soldier through the day to go to sleep at a normal time!

Grateful for the input from everyone!

whats sleep ( from a fellow shift worker )

I've got some magic beans if you're interested :-)

Mel - well done for walking away from this scam. It certainly isn't true that all Gumtree ads are scams but you do have to have your wits about you. Ignore the sarcastic comments from those that always 'know best' and don't be put off asking for advice/comments.

anyone in Falkirk wanna make £20 for 30mins work? lol

I'm close to Falkirk and will be in Falkirk @ around 13:00 today.

Tell them I will pop in with the cash (and 3 big lads) to pick it up and see what they respond with. ;)

I know of no one who has experienced a genuine transaction through gumtree for a real product, rather than a service, where the item was to be sent through the post. And yet I know of several (in RL and many, many, more through forums) who have been scammed or had the experience of the OP.

There is such a high proportion of scammers frequenting gumtree that it just isn't worth the effort and worry. Hell, gumtree makes egay look super secure and safe  :(

I wanted a particular AGP graphics card and could only find one in an old Gumtree ad. The seller seemed more cautious of me, than I of him. The transaction was fine.

I've just had a quick look through Gumtree and I'd say about 50% of the adverts I looked at for the likes of the Nikon D3s were scams, same (although to a lesser percentage) for iPhones and iPads.

Unless, of course, people really are spending £3500 on a camera and selling a month later for £700, or are happy to sell their brand new, sealed-in-box iPhone 4 for £100...;)

John and Graham, which is why I said this earlier in the thread:

No face-to-face, no money to be given over. Simple as.

I'm not advocating using Gumtree for a 'send money and receive product' sort of sale at all, but a lot of Gumtree's transactions do take place face-to-face and were successful, which is why I brought you (John) up on it. I'd avoid it as much as you for any product which needed to be sent, I hadn't even gotten half way into the OP before thinking SCAM SCAM SCAM :bonk:

Graham, you just have to be a smart buyer really. If you have any brain cells to rub together, you'll know to avoid the D3s for £500 and the 5dmkII for £700, and arguably anyone who does go and buy it and then has plod on their doorstep the day after probably deserves what they get really.

But I am going to try and counter the comments about Gumtree as I have had successful transactions through it personally, rather than just being an armchair warrior commenting on it  [EDIT: having read this last sentence back, I don't mean it in a rude, attacking way - just saying that I've had personal experiences, rather than anecdotes from others]
