HI - new here although have posted a 'hello' post on the new peoples board !

I am looking to buy a Canon 50mm f1.8 - looking around I have found one available for £74.95 delivered. Firstly does this seem a good price for a new one and secondly its from Simplyelectronics.net - has anyone used them to purchase online before and know good/bad about them before I part with my hard earned?

I would be happy to buy 2nd hand but apart from ebay dont know where to look - I'm not yet eligible to post on the forsale/to buy forums on TP and ebay didnt have any when I looked earlier today. Are there any other reputable online places for 2nd hand or new lenses? I did see a seller for HK on ebay - with good feedback -but nervous about buying something from there incase its a fake? Also delivery time may be an issue as I would really like this by the middle of next week!

A third option is if anyone knows a photography/camera supplier/shop in or near Cambridge - for new or 2nd hand lens

thanks for help and advice !

Hi Elen
Welcome to the forum.
£74.95 seems a good price for this lens. This "Nifty Fifty" lens is a cracker as most owners will agree.

I bought a camera from HK throuigh ebay a while back but was hit with import tax.
I've used Simplyelectronics before and found them to be quite reasonable.
My favourite online place for buying lenses is OneStop Digital - Great prices and delivery within 3-4 days.

I beleive Kerso on this site is selling Nifty Fiftys.

thanks all for the comments and advice. I had a look on one stop digital and their prices are very good ( less than £70 delivered) - they also ship from HK though so delivery times are 5-8 days - so about 10 days from payment - unfortunately I would really like this before next wekend if at all possible. I should have sorted this out much earlier I know ... I will get in touch with Kerso - he seems well liked and popular on here which is good to know - I would rather buy from a reputable source and know I can get it in time, even if it costs a little more.

I can only add to the recommendation to speak to Ian (kerso on here) I was actually using the lens I ordered from him in less than 24hrs - obviously we are beholden to the delivery services, but I've dealt with suppliers that take a week to even consider packing your order....

If there are any problems with an order or item from Ian, he WILL make it right.

There are lots of horror stories re: Simply Electronics. While I try to buy cheap it is worth paying a little more to get service too. Often Jessops can be cheapest.

Try camerapricebuster.co.uk

not much more to add really

I just sold mine on here for £60 + P&P.
Pretty sure that you can BUY on the FS thread, but need 50 posts to sell on there (sure someone with more than 2 brain cells will correct me)

I have 3 brain cells - and it's 100 posts and 30 days ;)

Kerso's prices certainly seem competitive from my research...

I obviously have no brain cells :) as yes I can buy but cannot sell - so I have posted on his most recent thread.

but will also look at those other suggestions too and keep my eye on the general for sale threads too.

Thanks again all

one stop digital have been my source for 3 lenses over the last few years, always with great service.
however, for speed, and UK warranty, kerso might be the best option as mentioned above

p.s nifty fifty is a lot of fun but is a little close for some shots. great value for money though :)
