Hi everyone,

I'm preparing a bunch of images for the celebration to follow my father's cremation in a week or so. He's had this image in a frame since I can remember, it was one of only a handful of things that survived a fire at the storage depot when we moved from Scotland to England.

Given I have scanned it and am posting it on a digital medium, can anyone tell me if this resembles a hand coloured print or a sketch perhaps? I honestly cannot tell.

It's on a thick paper. Otherwise, let me know if you need anymore info. Probably dates from late 1940's at a guess. Dad was born in 1940.

Thanks.

It looks like a hand coloured photo to me, particularly the eyes and hair. I am no expert though.

Wikipedia says colour photography was around at this time (if he was born in 1940, this is at least late 40s by my guess) so it could be colour as well as hand coloured.

As Andrew says though, those eyes look a bit unnatural to me, so I would imagine hand colouring unless you've "popped" it in Photoshop.

What was the print like? Was it an original with the photographers stamp on the back, or was it a (relatively) new print? It could be that someone scanned it themselves then photoshopped it later. Did you do any work on the scan (saturation/eye work in particular)?

It's a long time since I did any hand-colouring but this looks genuine to me.

There is no doubt at all that it is a hand coloured photographic print.
It looks like a dyed one not an oil based one. Though both types were popular at the time.

Oil ones were usually more detailed and could be altered as you worked them up. But took both longer to do and much longer to dry (up to a month) while dyed ones could be mounted the next day. I made both types in the 50's and 60's. They were still on offer into the Seventies.
